I'm worried that beyond the hype, Blu-ray will also allow the studios to do more than just deliver conent. When they say "interact" with consumers, does this mean we may buy a movie and then (1) "click here" to pay by credit card to unlock additional content, (2) pop-up ammounces this movie has been played more than the maximum allotted time, click here to buymore views, (3) sorry, your movie has already been tethered to someone else's player, click here to buy a license to watch it on this player, or (4) data mining that reports back how often I watch and what bonus materials I choose to see?

Just some worries. Just how smart are these things? Can anyone say it can't happen?

Sounds like Divx, the original competition to DVD. It failed miserably. It was horrible and nobody wanted it.

People want to buy something and "own it" - at least that was the message back then.

HD video disc is going to be hitting a small enough market segment as it is without pissing us off further with such nonsense...

So, MHO is no - though it most certainly can happen.

Cheers!
DAve.

Default sounds like a m$ move to me

I highly doubt that sony will pull this kind of bs. the ''this disc will self destruct in 5 plays'' or ''disc asigned to someone elses profile'' seems more like what microsoft does (& apple with their itunes). m$ seems to take joy in spying on consumers and meddling. but since sony has a large stake in the physical disc area I do not think they want to lose ground to downloaded content by limiting viewings and throwing adware into their discs.

There is a future in ad supported discs, guaranteed.

Will they be the norm? Absolutely not, as you can only generate revenue on your biggest titles in the amounts to make it worth it

They've been trying limited play discs in various forms for years, they never work.

Smart depends on the programming involved.

It can't happen implies it'll never happen. And that's a huge guarantee. I would say unlikely in the next five years.

If you want to avoid all of what you listed, neither HD-DVD nor BD is not for you. Stick to DVD and play it on a standalone player that's not connected to the internet.

Without an Internet connection? Yes, I can say unlocking with a credit card, and reporting back your activity can't happen without an Internet connection. And there is no support for an Internet connection in BD until Profile 2.0 (BD-Live).

HD DVD has the mandatory Internet connection and interactive support to allow for this.

Doubtful BD will add much of that since Internet access is not required for BD like it is for HD-DUD.

To be fair, HD DVD requires an internet connection on the machine, but does not require you to connect it.

Buy and enjoy BD (or HD DVD for that matter) if you have the money and want to have the improved PQ and AQ and don't worry about the rest. When those disks start appearing with "features" you don't like, don't buy them. They will die a natural death. I can't see the studios trying to resurrect "buy a disk for X number of plays only". I can see them trying that with video downloads.

YOU MEAN THEY CAN ACTUALLY DECIDE TO MAKE THE DISCS SO THAT YOU CAN ONLY WATCH IT A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF TIMES? How is that possible? Does the PS3 remember how many times you've watched a BD and then shuts off and doesn't allow you to watch it anymore? The day that happens I will sell every HD thing I have including the PS3 and BD discs. I get angry just thinking about it.

Talk about digging up an OLD, OLD thread! OP: 8/14/2004!!!
Aire Libre that started this thread joined on 8/14/04 - and has only this one post!

Nevertheless, the question raised is useful and pertinent.

If someone wanted to write malicious code and then disseminate it, how would one stop it? Does the PS3 come with built-in checks-and-balances?

Rup.

Oh... Just wait until it actually causes you a problem. Then get mildly upset and write a letter.

Well I reviewed 300 on BD and HD DVD...and I didn't see anything about buying movie related items. One thing I would like to add is after checking out the extra's on HD DVD...I will be one happy person when the day comes when I can get this cool stuff with my PS3. I thought there was some really cool features. I want them NOW!

The HD-DVD allows the user to buy ringtones.
