Default Loose discs?

Well, OK, first of all, I tried to find of of those Amazon disclaimers that talk about loose discs in multi-disc boxsets, but couldn't right off hand, but you know what I'm talking about.

Disclaimer: This thread really has more to do with DVDs than BDs.

Anyway, so back in the day of regular DVD (that sounds funny, doesn't it), one of the big problems was getting box sets with multiple discs, or even single movies where the disc(s) was/were loose inside the case, and consumers would flip out if they had one, and would immediately go through an exchange/return routine to get a copy that wasn't loose.

But now with BDs and their scratch resistant polymer layer, do these same (IMO) anal retentive consumers still feel the need to go through the exchange/return procedure for loose BDs?

And another thing, wouldn't the simple task of just checking the disc for scratches first before initiating the exchange/return procedure make more sense? Hell, I'd even go a step further...even if there was a slight scratch, try playing the disc to see if it is affected by the scratch?

In the 9 years since I've been collecting digital video media on disc, I don't think I've ever had a newly scratched disc that actually didn't play. Oh sure, I've had a few that had other surface defects that didn't work, like layer rot and/or pitted surfaces (the Space:AAB set comes to mind). But never have I had a loose disc that was scratched to the point of unplayability. Ironically though, I've had a few discs that had no visible surface defect that wouldn't work.

LOL, so my question for discussion here is: does anyone here still flip out over loose discs? Or do you just examine them first and try them out before exchanging/returning them?
