I have this TV and am wondering if anyone know what hertz it can display? I am on the fence for the Pioneer or the Sony and I know they can ouput 24 hertz.

I too own this wondeful 1080p SXRD XBR LCD TV and I have the Sony BDP-S1 connected to it, set at 1080p 24 frames per second and the image is steller. can't go wrong with this combination. I looked at the Pioneer Elite as well. It had some features I would never use and it is, in my opinion, overpriced, for what I wanted: Top notch DVD entertainment, and Sony comes through with zero disappointment !!!

Can anyone list the major differences between the XBR2 version and regular SXRD model?

XBR2 has the WEGA HD Engine, higher quality lamp, IFP2 (optimizes contrast), CCP-XA (signal to noise filter) and an extra replacement lamp (verified acceptance of a 1080p/24 fps signal). The 70" version has an extra HDMI port in the front.

Thanks. I'm seriously thinking of getting a 60" SXRD soon, and wanted to know if the XBR2 is worth the extrs. It sounds like it definitely is.

SXRD sets all use BRAVIA ENGINE PRO (or WEGA ENGINE HD for you guys stateside) which means = DRC mf Version 2.5.

Obviously better than Bravia Engine (DRC mf-V1) or Bravia Engine EX (DRC mf-V2).

Also, the fact that the 50 inch model is dirt cheap and already has HDMI with it.

The XBR2 DOES NOT accept a 1080/24p signal. Even if you turn on 24p output on your player you will not get this output unless you hit the video format on button on your remote and select direct. If you do,then you will notice how the screen goes black and it tells you that its an unsupported signal. Otherwise the player, even when set to auto, converts the 24p signal to 60p.

The sony has a refresh rate of 60hz, which clearly tells you that it cannot accept the 24p signal.

Default I totally agree with WilliamC no 1080P/24 support on Sony rear projectors

WilliamC thanks for the info. So many times I keep having disagreements with people regarding this issue. For some reason people keep telling me Sony SXRD rear projectors accept a 1080p/24 signal. This is false information. The only Sony set on the market that accepts a 1080p/24 signal is the SXRD front projector with a refresh rate of 96hz. Now most likely we should see in late 2007 a new line of rear projector from Sony that accept 1080p/24 with a refresh rate at 96hz or better yet 120hz. If owners of the 2006 models of SXRD rear projector sets would read the instruction manual they would discover Sony only mentions 60HZ and does not support 24HZ input.
I will say it again as I have said many times; currently the Sony SXRD VPL-VW50 is the only display device from Sony that accepts a 1080p/24 signal. This front projector sales for $5,000 retail and can be purchased from mail order companies for around $3,600. Beautiful 15,000:1 contrast ratio. Pioneer also makes a 1080P Plasma with 1080P/24 input that has a refresh rate of 72hz.

Rats! I was wondering about 24p.

What about colour depth? Does anything do > 8-bit, HDMI 1.3?

I think the current SXRD sets from Sony only use HDMI 1.1 or 1.2a.

As well as it only having 8-bit RGB processing and as they said, no support for true 1080p/24 fps signal.

But then again, the lack of features justify the cheap prices of SXRD sets. When compared to flat panel counterparts, these come in cheaper but that's because these projection sets are CHEAP.

Personally, if the talk is about SXRD, then have you guys seen the SXRD flat panel at CES 2007?

Yup, the addition of a "laser engine" must have shrunk the size and reduced the weight by HALF. This is what a Sony SXRD should be like..................... a Flat Panel (with HDMI 1.3, xvYCC color space option, 10-bit RGB processing or above and 120hz refresh rate to boot). That's the Sony SXRD set that I'd rather wait for and none from the current 2006 lineup.

But if the current (current SXRD) sets work for you, then why not? In the end, you'll be the judge anyway

HDMI 1.3 has 10-bit. however nothing on the market currently supports xvYCC and it MAY be a while before any media shows up using the extra color info provided by 1.3
I believe that pioneer will be releasing a device soon with xvYCC, but we would also need our BD player with it and films mastered taking advantage of xvYCC.

Here is my wish list of features I would like to see on a Sony SXRD or another brand of LCOS rear projector in 2007:

1. 1080P/24 support for all HDMI inputs with 120HZ refresh rate.
2. Built in MPEG-2/MPEG-4 Decoder with two way QAM tuner. The new M card supports Video on Demand and interactive features (In the future the M card will be replaced with downloadable security card).
3. HDMI 1.3 with support for billions of colors using XVYCC and Deep Color instead of the 16.7 million colors supported today would be awesome. Might have to wait a few years for this feature.

Anyways that is my wish list. Sony use to have the best rear projection screens. DLP a year ago could not hold up to the SXRD sets quality. Now according to some reviews I have read there is now DLP and LCOS rear projectors buy JVC and Samsung that have an overall better picture then Sony’s SXRD. Read the February 2007 issue of Home Theater magazine for details. They have 6 HDTV’s battle it out and while Sony has the best contrast ratio the Samsung HL-S188W DLP, JVC HD-61FN97 D-ILA, AND Toshiba 62MX196 DLP were rated by the reviews to have slightly better picture performance then Sony’s KDS-R60XBR2 SXRD. Sony needs to start making some higher quality sets that cost more money. I would like to see an Elite line of XBR that out performs other companies products. Just because a product gets cheaper every year does not make the product better.

Inverse telecine is trivial with 1080p/60.

AAABBCCCDD -> ABCD

Algorithm: Same frame? Toss it.

Do the SXRD do this, or do they display 1080p/60 directly (60Hz)? If the former, then 1080p/24 input is redundant.

Default New 70 Inch Lcd Sony Scheduled For Spring

On page 33 of today’s issue of Twice, Sony is scheduled to release a $33,000 70 inch LCD that supports 1080P/24 with a refresh rate of 120HZ. This set will also have HDMI 1.3 with XvYCC with expanded color. Model number is KDL-70XBR3 and it will be the largest Sony LCD to date.
Would make a great wall TV for a bedroom for those that can afford it. Prices will fall over time. Sony has sold over 111 million Playstation 2’s. I hope in 7 years Playstation 3 will have sold over 120 million.
