Default Why to HD-DVD first?

Hey everyone. This is my first post.

I was browsing around for release dates of certain movies. I noticed how a lot of movies that are able to be released on Blu-Ray always come out on HD-DVD first. If Blu-Ray is supposedly winning the whole format war, how come a lot of titles still come out on HD-DVD first?

Blu Ray is winning the format war? Why, because they outsold HD DVD for the last 4 months? HD DVD outsold Blu Ray all of 2006.

All skirmishes. Come back in a year or two and lets see. Neither format is gonna win because of PS3 owners or Xbox or whatever. When your mom or Uncle Bob starts to buy an actual player, those are the people who will ultimately decide, because your average joe like mom and Uncle Bob are not gonna buy a PS3 to play movies.

If you check his posts, they actually have some thought put into them. Just because some of us don't blindly side with Blu-ray doesn't mean we don't belong on this forum.

Yea, but Blu-ray has passed HD-DVD in every sales category now, including discs sold since inception (of which HD-DVD had a head start, so BD has momentum). It's not that it's over now or anything, but right now blu-ray has the favor. We will need to wait, though, for the cheaper players to hit, but when they come out, stores will push the best-selling one.

As for why some movies aren't out now: When the BDA (Blu-ray Disc Association) set mandates for features that players must support, they didn't make BD-Java, which does the interactive movie experience (IME, including picture-in-picture), a standard feature. HD-DVD did make their IME standard. So, companies like Warners are holding back some releases until the software for BD-Java is ready "for primetime" w/ IME. I don't know when that will be, but Dragon's Lair has a PiP for the commentary using BD-J, so it should be close.

BD has owned 2007 and taken over the "since inception" lead.

if HD-DVD was out since 2006 started...I would be willing to bet that BD would still be outselling HD-DVD "since inception"..

hey guysm rather than bash the guy, how about we answer the question. sound good? it is a valid question

gussler, what films are you concerned with in particular. warner has been hd-dvd bias'd so far. we don't know why, but it has happened. all warner titles are coming to BR at some point. universal is hd-dvd exclusive at this point. essentially, this means that none of their films will come to BR (until they go neutral or switch). however, there aren't a ton of titles in this situation. i'd recomend looking at the apocalist to see the upcoming release list.

I would like to mention that HDi is ECMAScript compliant where BD-J is based on J2ME. A good programmer will tell you that Java is inherently more powerful than Javascript will ever be. Sony has made it a point to bring more innovative technologies to market with the Cell Processor and Blu-Ray and it has taken them longer than MS to release but I think when the dust settles you might have Blu-ray coming out on top because they will have the superior platform. Not just in storage capacity but with interactivity capabilities.

IMHO, I think Sony has an idea of a new level of interactivity that most people can't imagine but will ultimately be revolutionary in terms of how people consume entertainment.

HD-DVD has made it first to the market but that doesn't necessarily make it better.

I'm going to wait to buy an HD-DVD player. I have a feeling that in a couple of years it might just serve better as a doorstop and force you to buy a newer player that can compete with the capabilities of the PS3 and Blu-ray players (not the current crop). Crazy, I know. Just my .02

Also you have to take in consideration the Manufacturing handicap that HD dvd holds over Blu-ray. It takes less time and a hell of a lot of less money to produce a Hd dud Coaster as oppose to a Blu-ray work of art.

actually, this isn't quite true. i think the difference per disk is something like 3 cents but per meg / gig is much cheaper

Cumulatively HD-DVD will be cheaper than Blu-Ray but those cost associated with Blu-Ray won't be noticed by consumers because Best Buy and Costco rely on volume to make a profit and they will be priced competitively. Besides the benefits of Blu-Ray in the near future will far out weigh the price difference.

Currently there are only 18 Warner movies that are on HD DVD first. so it's not a lot.

If what I think you are saying is true and HD-DVD cost 3 cents less to manufacture and produce, as a consumer I don't care about the costs difference compared to Blu-Ray. The average price per title is 24.95. I would care, however; if I was the manufacturer or producer of HD-DVD and Blu-Ray where you are dealing in large quantities. Over a lifetime the 3 cent difference can really add up.

So the Blu-Ray players are more expensive than HD-DVD and the HD-DVD media is cheaper but I think the near future benefits from Blu-Ray are going to far outweigh any cost difference.

Well, complain directly to Warners then! A t least a 3rd or more of those don't have IME stuff so that's not the excuse!

The obvious answer to the question posed by this thread is that HD-DVD was available as a consumer format first.

Therefore, even studios that wanted to release blu-ray versions didn't have the opportunity to release them before releasing HD-DVDs.

What does this have to do with the price of wheat in China?
On the shelves BD movies are cheaper than hd dvd movies...and not a damm thing else matters except what the consumer sees on the price tag.
