Thay Sammy BDP1200 has 5.1 analog outputs and can decode Dolby TrueHD, so you can get an older receiver on ebay or refurbed as long as it has analog inputs and still take advantage of 2/3 of the hd audio codecs.

Given your budget spending money on a new receiver seems a bit of a waste, unless you upgrade to the ps3, wife permitting, in which case you would need a receiver that accepts audio over HDMI. In your price range that would be an Onkyo 606 or that Sony that everyone lists but I can't remember.

If you only have $500 for a receiver AND speakers then you might want to just wait until you can spend a bit more. You'll appreciate the difference in the end.

Before we can help you we need to know what your maximum budget is for a receiver and speakers - and if you want a 5.1 system or just a 2.0 for now and build it up in the future

Check my sig. Get the 605 and Polk 5.1 system. That's less than $500.

Thanks for all the responses....my maximum budget would be about a grand. I planned to spend $500 at most for a receiver until i upgrade my entire system...we are looking to buy a house and once thats done then im upgrading my whole setup. bigger tv, ps3, etc...but thats later on

I'm afraid that's not accurate. Although the 1200 has superb PQ, it can't handle TrueHD or DTS HD MA. PCM is the only lossless it serves up.

I was going by the information available on this site. If that information is accurate or not I am not entirely aware.

I believe that one of the firmware updates enabled TrueHD decoding for the 1200. I'm not positive, but I think that was the case. I know it can't bitstream anything or do anything with DTS-MA.

It is, unfortunately, inaccurate.

Negatory. Early in the game (I bought one of the first), it was determined that the chipset used was incapable of handling either TrueHD or DTS HD MA, either via internal decoding or bitstreaming. Such is the price for early adoption.

If anyone has discovered that a recent firmware update has miraculously enabled TrueHD decoding, that hasn't been posted on the several 1200 owners fora I inhabit.

Look at my "larger budget HT" option in my sig. You may go over budget, but it's worth it.
