Blu-ray Champion

I am getting ready to build another high-end PC. The BLU-RAY disc load times on high-end PC’s are faster then the Playstation 3. What is disappointing about building a high-end PC is there is still no support for 1080P/24 and 7.1 DTS-HD Master audio.
Issues I am running into selecting components 1. The fastest computer playback drive is the LG GGC H20L that is a dual format drive that reads BLU-RAY discs at 6X speed and HD-DVD discs at 3X speed. I am not interested in that LG drive since I do not own any HD-DVD discs. So I plan on buying the Pioneer BDC-2202B 5X BLU-RAY drive instead. I can always upgrade the BLU-RAY drive when 6X-8X computer BLU-RAY drives become available. On another computer the 4X speed is slower then I like when fast forwarding or rewinding BLU-RAY discs. Also one day I will be interested in getting a BLU-RAY writer and using the BLU-RAY drive for computer storage and faster drives are ideal. 2. I still cannot find a HDMI computer graphics card that will pass 7.1 channels of DTS-HD master audio view HDMI. The best HD card appears to be the ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series. Hopefully in the future 7.1 DTS-HD Master audio will be a option on future computer cards. http://ati.amd.com/products/radeonhd4800/specs.html 3. Another issue I am running into is one can only playback BLU-RAY discs at 1080P/60 using the 3:2 pulldown process. Almost all 1080P computer monitors refresh at 60HZ and even if one can find a computer monitor that supports 48HZ, 72HZ, 96HZ, 120HZ or other multiplies one still can not bypass the 3:2 pulldown process due to the BLU-RAY playback software. So if a desktop computer LCD monitor were to support 120HZ and the computer graphics card were to support 24fps output the problem is with the BLU-RAY playback software and the 60HZ will be frame doubled to 120HZ with 3/2 pulldown included. There needs to be an option in the software to switch from 60HZ to 24fps. All the BLU-RAY computer software that I have seen will add a 3:2 pulldown process and output at 60HZ. If one comes out with a computer monitor 30 inches or less that supports multiplies of the original frame it will do no good since the BLU-RAY playback software already added a 3:2 pulldown process. Hopefully in the future BLU-RAY playback software for computers will have a option for 24fps so in the very very rare chance someone owns the correct graphics card and monitor they will get true 1080P/24 refresh rates without 3:2 pulldown. I would love to see a Pioneer Kuro 30 inch 2560 X 1600 computer monitor one day. 4. I was planning on purchasing a 60HZ 2560 X 1600 30 inch LCD computer monitor. There are several different models and brands available between $1,250-$4,500. The problem is if I want to use one of the 30 inch monitors for BLU-RAY I need a HDCP (High definition content protection feature). So far I am having trouble finding a 30 inch 2560 X 1600 computer monitor that is HDCP. The Samsung XL30 for around $4,500 according to the specs is not HDCP. http://www.samsung.com/us/system/consumer/product/2008/02/29/ls30eddlbxaa/XLseries_Datasheet_LR.pdf There is no way I am spending $4,500 for a computer monitor that does not have the HDCP feature. The only 30 inch 2560 X 1600 computer monitor that might be HDCP is the Gateway XHD3000 LCD monitor. That monitor can be found for around $1,500 online. The problem is the official Gateway specs do not mention HDCP but the computer shopper review mentions it is HDCP. So either Gateway forgot to mention that feature or Computer Shopper is in error. http://www.gateway.com/retail/xhd3000.php http://computershopper.com/reviews/gateway-xhd3000-lcd-monitor-review So once I build my several thousand dollar high-end PC with 8GB of DDR3 memory I will not be able to get the video and audio performance that a dedicate standalone BLU-RAY player and a large flat panel display can provide. Of course my computers primary purpose will not be for watching BLU-RAY movies but still it is disappointing that 1080P/24 and DTS-HD Master audio has not arrived yet to a desktop PC or Notebook PC. Well it looks like soon ASUS will be releasing a HDMI 1.3a sound card that will pass DTS-HD master audio.
