I'm using a 22" Gateway Monitor that supports HDMI and HDCP with a Playstation 3 to watch my Blu Ray movies. I have these attached via HDMI and I have my PS3 set to output at 720p for movies. The monitors max supported resolution is 1680x1050. In all of the movies I have watched there seems to be a significant amount of fuzziness. The picture still looks nice but in most cases it can be sort of fuzzy. Thing's just don't look terribly sharp. What can I do about this? HDTV on this looks FANTASTIC but while watching a Blu Ray it doesn't look nearly as good........Any ideas for settings I could mess with on the monitor?

So far, Rush Hour 3, Dan in Real Life and 300. 300 seemed to look pretty good overall but seemed to be lacking a certain level of detail.

What is the BEST looking Blu Ray film basically that most people agree on? I will go and rent it and see how it looks in comparison to the others. It's too bad that all Blu Rays don't look the same........

Well all masters the transfer comes from aren't the same, so movies are going to vary in look. Some of the best looking off the top of my head would be, "I, Robot" "Casino Royale" "Crank". These are some of my personal favorite visual wise.

honestly, I like the look of 300... but if you want extremely clean picture, go with Cars or Ratatouille
also these threads should help you a bit, a lot of people don't like the grain: https://forum.blu-ray.com/search.php?searchid=903797 |

Could someone maybe give me a quick rundown for education purposes about what exactly a Blu Ray Transfer consists of and why some of them vary? Or at least point me to a thread or something? Thanks!

Ya, it seems to me like it almost blurs the picture.........I really don't like it. I guess I will try and stick to movies that are said to have low grain or just put up with it I guess.

You are scaling 720p to fit a much larger space. You lose sharpness and your monitor's built in scaler may add some noise. Try running Blu-rays in 1080i, That looked better to me on the 22 that I ran for awhile. |

If the picture itself is actually "fuzzy," that doesn't sound like film grain. Many films with grain still possess an incredible amount of fine detail...take Black Hawk Down, e.g.
Do what others here have said--play Ratatouille or Cars, which have zero grain to speak of, being animation, and if you see any fuzziness there, you know it's not the Blu-rays. |

The grain in 300 is ADDED as a post-production effect. Most movies have a bit of grain. Depending on the cameras and the filming process used, grain can be present throughought the entire film, or just in darker or hazy scenes. Its a natural quality of film/photography. You want to be able to see the grain in the movies that have it, then you can be sure you are maximizing sharpness and seeing all the details. Noise cancelling and other processes that try to remove grain also soften the picture, sacrificing detail. Low res/compressed sources, like DVD, Also typically do not show film grain well. Many modern movies though, are shot with really high quality equipment and are slicked up a lot in post production so they have a very crisp appearance and exhibit little grain. Good examples of this would be The 5th Element, Casino Royale, and I, Robot. Casino Royale does exihibit grain in hazy or darker scenes though, which shows they were modest in post production. Older movies tend to have more instances of grain because older camera equipment was/is not as good. Last edited by Toptube; 08-12-2008 at 12:24 AM. |
