Default Emily - Crossing the Uncanny Valley

This is not directly PS3 related, but it represents a huge step in human computer animation. The company working on this, Image Metrics, developed the human animations for Grand Theft Auto IV.

The uncanny valley is that point in computer animation that developers are seeking to cross, where humans perceive the computer generated image to be real. Quantic Dream is trying to push the boundaries with Heavy Rain, and they're coming really close, especially for a video game, let alone CGI.

I think Image Metrics can see the other side of the uncanny valley. Check out the article and video at this link:

http://technology.timesonline.co.uk/...cle4557935.ece

I'd like to see video games reach this level of animation realism some day. It may not be possible on the PS3. However, if the PS3 isn't close to being maxed out, as Sony claims, maybe we'll see something close down the road.

Holy Shnikey, that's impressive! I would have sworn that was a real person.

This reminds me of Lightstage (part of Cinema 2.0) for ATI's new 4800 GPU. ATI takes a slightly different approach to crossing the uncanny valley. They just capture all the data sets of the actual person and renders that person digitally.

Personally, I believe both approaches are in PS4 territory, but I guess we'll find out, at least, by 2011. The future of game graphics look bright indeed!

Somehow my instincts tell me that this is real, no way they can animate this realistically. I suppose that reason says this is really CGI but wow

The mouth. Still not there. The rest of the movements are spot on.

Skin is still a little too waxy looking and the eyes kind of move a little to freely inside her head, but the animation/mannerisms are dead on. This is a huge step forward. Show me a runner jogging and stretching and then I'll be impressed.

Agreed, but the Youtube video, in my previous post, about AMD/ATI's Lightstage (1:10 in the video) has it down pat. However, I'm pretty sure they're throwing a lot more brute force at solving that issue.

If you didn't know she wasn't real initially, it would take a few seconds to figure out something wasn't right.

That was kind of my reaction when I first heard about Home. This is just another gradual step...

Default computer animation now beginning to blur the lines of reality for games

check out this link. It's amazing where we're going. Imaging COD one of these days. or uncharted.

We are on the brink of .......something spectacular in the world of gaming.

its gonna be a long, long time before a game looks that good. id guess the end of the 9th gen. we might see something that good at the earliest.

games of today are about the level of toy story animation (and toy story was not ground breaking in terms of realism). so real-time gaming quality is about a decade and a half behind pre-rendered stuff

it will be at least 12-15 more years before we start seeing games look that good.

i know that games have a graphical plateau and that there is no way anything this gen. will look that good.

i know that most likely next gen. will see some pretty amazing stuff, it will still probably fall short of that.

the gen. after that is most likely. however, we have to keep in mind where the gaming industry is headed and just how much it would cost to render an entire game in that level of detail. i mean, that was a 30 sec. video, imagine Kojima having to make 9 hours of cutscenes look that good, it would take a long time even with the hardware of the future and it would take a lot of money.

if things like the wii continue to do well, the market will move away from graphical powerhouse consoles and more into innovative gameplay features.
