Default Man says 9-foot tapeworm came from undercooked salmon salad !!

clicky

Quote:
Anthony Franz had started to eat healthy, but the salmon salad he ordered for lunch from Shaw's Crab House in August 2006 wasn't the best choice, according to a lawsuit filed Monday.

Franz says he became violently ill for several days after eating that salad and later "passed a 9-foot tapeworm."

A pathologist determined the giant tapeworm only has one source -- "undercooked fish, such as salmon," according to court papers.

The lawsuit against Shaw's Crab House, 21 E. Hubbard, and its parent company, Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises, claims the restaurant's staff was negligent in serving him undercooked fish.

Franz, who was not available for comment, wants more than a refund. He's seeking $100,000 for his pain, suffering, lost time from work and "lost enjoyment of life."
Last one for today, Deci...I swear...

(Joke) So Hamburglar, I'm pretty sure you have a tapeworm or two, I mean, you always try to get the Micky D's Big Mac's whenever you can.

Maybe it was a tapeworm he already had that just didn't care for the salad and decided to vote with it's scolex and get out whilst it could?

This is why it's important to have a bowel movement at least once per day.

Y'know, that reminds me of an old urban myth that a woman ordered a bottle of diet pills. When she got the bottle, she relised that there was only one pill. The bottle said that the one will be all you need. So she took it and in a few days, she began to eat herself stupid, and not gain any weight. Then, she realised that she was begining to feel weak, so she ate more and more, but it was not working. Then, one morning, she woke up, with a nosebleed and then found out, that a tapeworm had burrowed out. I saw it on a TV show, called "Urban Legends, Fact or Fiction" or something.

I believe it takes a while for that to grown to 9 feet? By that time it would be hard to determine where it came from. But yea very gross

Supposedly a forensic expert determined that the tapeworm came from undercooked fish. I'm not sure if there are different tapeworms for different animals myself.

you missed my point, there is no way he ate that without knowing it, meaning he consumed eggs or a smaller worm that grew into a 9 foot worm. Didnt happen overnight I wouldnt think

Yeah I was thinking that, but I can't find anything on the growth speed of tapeworms. Is it something that can feasibly happen within a couple of weeks? Or does it take months/years for them to grow that large? Is 9 feet even large for a tapeworm? I've been holding my cynicism until I know more of the facts.

wrong kind of tapeworm Pinoy. Different species. he got the kind found in salmon similar to that of PORK, the other white meat
Quote:
Diphyllobothrium /Di·phyl·lo·both·ri·um/ (-both´re-um) a genus of large tapeworms, including D. la´tum (broad or fish tapeworm), found in the intestine of humans, cats, dogs, and other fish-eating mammals; its first intermediate host is a crustacean and the second a fish, the infection in humans being acquired by eating inadequately cooked fish.dorland()
Heres the species in question, I am still looking at the growth cycle

Quote:
Adult tapeworms may infect humans, canids, felines, bears, pinnipeds, and mustelids, though the accuracy of the records for some of the nonhuman species is disputed. Immature eggs are passed in feces of the mammal host (the definitive host, where the worms reproduce). After ingestion by a suitable freshwater crustacean such as a copepod (the first intermediate host) the coracidia develop into procercoid larvae. Following ingestion of the copepod by a suitable second intermediate host, typically a minnow or other small freshwater fish, the procercoid larvae are released from the crustacean and migrate into the fish's flesh where they develop into a plerocercoid larvae (sparganum). The plerocercoid larvae are the infective stage for the definitive host (including humans).
Because humans do not generally eat undercooked minnows and similar small freshwater fish, these do not represent an important source of infection. Nevertheless, these small second intermediate hosts can be eaten by larger predator species, for example, trout, perch, and walleyed pike. In this case, the sparganum can migrate to the musculature of the larger predator fish and mammals can acquire the disease by eating these later intermediate infected host fish raw or undercooked. After ingestion of the infected fish, the plerocercoids develop into immature adults and then into mature adult tapeworms which will reside in the small intestine. The adults attach to the intestinal mucosa by means of the two bilateral grooves (bothria) of their scolex. The adults can reach more than 10 m (up to 30 m) in length in some species such as D. latum, with more than 3,000 proglottids. Immature eggs are discharged from the proglottids (up to 1,000,000 eggs per day per worm) and are passed in the feces. Eggs appear in the feces 5 to 6 weeks after infection. The tapeworm can live up to 20 years.
