p.s. it does display BD true hd in my onkyo display, so I know it is using that format.
Heres the thing- if the movie is in 5.1, you do not want to watch it in 7.1. In other words, you dont want to have anything in the far back speakers. Some receivers can take the 5.1 signal and spread it to all 7 speakers (like the Onkyo 705), however the 605 can not do that. ...not that you would really want to.

As for Dolby Digital playing through all 7 speakers. I have no idea about that. ...it does it for me with my 605 when im playing Rock Band as well.
No big deal.

What im trying to say is that your receiver is working perfect - as is your player. You cant, and dont need to change anything. If you really want your 5.1 movies to play in 7.1, then you'll need to upgrade your receiver. However, the 605 does everything perfectly. The last thing i would want is to have my reveicer spread the audio to speakers that arent supposed to be playing anything...
Hope that helped...

EDIT: Just noticed that you said 606 instead of 605. Im not 100% sure, but i think they are the exact same thing - just the 606 has more HDMI ports. Dont quote me on that though...
If the 606 has that major difference from the 605 (I really dont think so...), then in your settings you should be able to change it to play 5.1 movies in 7.1. Again though, im not totally sure - but i dont think it does. Lets say it does though - You may want to really think about doing it. If the developers of a movie make the movie for 5.1 systems, then you really shouldnt go changing it to your preference just for those extra speakers. Though, maybe you'll like it. I dont know.
You may want to wait for some other people who know more about your specific receiver to comment. Sorry. ...I could have swore you said 605.
