Default 605 & Lpf Q???

Well, I searched for a thread about this, but didn’t find an answer to my question, so…

My front speakers are crossed over to the sub @ 60hz. My surrounds will only go down to 120hz. As a result, I have my sub set to LPF of LFE 120. My question is, is the sub playing all the way up to 120hz even with the fronts, or only up to the xover point of 60hz?

There are a few knobs and settings on this... (sub will not be called 'speaker' in my conversation below. speaker refers to fronts, center and surrounds)

If the receiver is cutting the frequency at 60HZ, then no speaker is receiving anything below 60Hz. If LFE is set to 120hz, the sub received 120Hz and under. What is the knob on the sub set to (also important to check)?

Your surrounds shouldn't ever need to get down to 60Hz as they are generally used for accenting. Don't use their capabilities to set crossover points for your system. Dial that LFE down to match the speakers (60-80HZ). Play with the x-over point as you want the best blend from your fronts to the sub.

**edit** i'm assuming you have fronts capable of 60Hz from the OP.

1. I am not using a center channel, I like the “phantom center” approach much better.
2. The fronts are capable of 60hz
3. The surrounds are capable of 120 at best
4. The sub is not setup in a conventional manner. It is being powered by one channel of an Adcom stereo amp. All settings are made by the receiver.

So my question is, is the receiver handing off only frequencies below 60hz from the mix to the front speakers, and only below 120hz from the mix to the surrounds? On the setup screen, I currently have the “LPF of LFE” set to 120hx, so there’s no gap in sound to the surrounds – is this the correct way to do it?

With the way you have it setup, you'd want your Low Pass filter of Low frequency effects set to 60 Hz. Are the fronts rated 60-25kHz, or lower? generally speaking speakers aren't very efficient at their lowest rated frequency...i.e. 80Hz may be a better place to have your cross-over point.

But wouldn't that be robbing my surrounds the frequencies between 60 & 120?

The surrounds only get accenting sounds, they don't get the full range of sounds that front speakers typically get. In most cases, they won't be there anyway.

Plus if the surrounds can't get down passed 120Hz, they'd never be able to play the sounds anyway..

never asked what speakers you using... what are they?

From big Daddy's calibration threat
[quote]Setting the Low Pass Crossover Frequency
You need to set the crossover on the receiver’s menu and not the subwoofer. If your main front speakers are full size with good bass response, set the low pass filter to 80Hz. If your main speakers are small, bookshelf, satellite, or in-wall, set the low pass filter in the 100 to 120Hz range.[quote]

hope that helps

These:

Don’t laugh too hard, they’re better than they look

Handles up to 120 watts peak power
Each speaker features one 6-1/2" woofer and one 4/5" tweeter
Carbon fiber cone
Product Features
Bass-reflex design provides a deep, extended response
1" silk dome tweeter for crisp and full audio
Binding post capability allows improved connectivity
High-gloss front panel with modern curved cabinet
Frequency response: 50Hz - 20kHz
Sensitivity: 90dB
Impedance: 8 ohms

I appreciate your input, but it still doesn’t answer my question – am I losing the frequencies between 60 & 120 if I set my LPF to 60?

I'm not one to judge others equipment. If it does the job for you, that's all that matters.... now back to the topic.

if you set the crossover at 120Hz in your receiver for surrounds, then yes. technically it would be robbing them of those frequencies. However.. The LPF is only for the subwoofer. All others are highpass crossover points.

You can review and change them here:
Setup > 2. Speaker Setup > 2. Speaker Config

This will allow you to set the crossover point for every speaker... LFE is for sub only. All others are High pass (meaning the cut out frequencies below the one you set)
