PS3 is due for release on the 23/03/07 in Aus ( 1 month to go
![]() 1. When showing a Blue-ray movie on a projector (Panasonic PT-AE900E) which has a native resolution ao 720p (is capable of 1080i I belive) will the PS3 automaticaly drop the res to 480p as some sources are indicating? ![]() 2. The PS3 is SACD compatable will the fact that I will be using optical output affect this, as all other SACD players use Mullti-ch output leads? ![]() |

I have had a close look at the US specifications as I'm in exactly the same situation (only the PT AE700).
Acording to the Spec's SACD is only available over HDMI - which means you need a SACD decoder in a receiver that supports HDMI. 720p output is supported by the PS3 - which is what I would use from the PS3 as otherwise the PS3 will do a down conversion to 1080i then the projector down to 720p the quality should be better with only 1 conversion (assuming an orriginal 1080p source). The 480 thing is if or when they protect discs from outputting HD over analog, HDMI will be the only way to get a high def picture. As your projector support HDMI it would be the better option. I have heard the only differrence between the Aussie and Kiwi release is the Kiwi has a sheep skin cover and instead of going beep goes Bah. |

The playstation 3 will play back the blueray movie in 1080i if your projector accepts it.
The optical out wont effect multi channel SACD. To take advantage of it you would need a receiver that can receive a SACD signal via HDMI. |

The downrezzzing affected games more than movies as many old TV's (like my sister's) couldn't display 720p. Blu-ray can do 1080i/1080p with no problem while PS3 games mostly come in 720p. Rather than drop the 720p games into 1080, it would drop them to 480p. But for the most part Blu-ray movies don't have the problem.

Just use the optical out, you will get the standard Dolby and DTS, just not SACD. I think the receivers have a little catching up to do, so now may not be the best time to upgrade anyway.
Next time we will send over the Ausie team - instead of Australia A. |

I think PS3 can do Stereo SACD over the analog outs. All SACDs have High Resolution SACD Stereo in them. As most music recordings were made for Stereo, you get the High Resolution version of the original master. (The multichannel version included of those Stereo recordings on Multichanel SACDs is a new remix.)

I'm not certain of this, as I don't follow the gaming info too well; but in the PS3, are 720 games outputted 1:1 at 720 or at 1080? Now for movies, If you have a 720 TV, when you play 1080 Blu-rays, does the player downconvert them to 720? I think it doesn't for the time being? Correct me if I'm mistaken on this, (there's so many combinations from reading the manual) but I think if you have a 1080p display, 1080p Blu-rays are displayed as 1080p, while 1080i Blu-rays get downrezed to 480p if you have only 1080p and 720p selected over HDMI in the settings. If you select 1080i only, both 1080p and 1080i are outputted at 1080i If you select 720p only, both are outputted at 480p If you select all outputs (480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p), 1080i Blu-ray programs should get sent as 1080i, and 1080p movies as 1080p, although sometimes I think they may get sent as 1080i after you've played 1080i material, so you might have have to "re-engage" 1080p-esness by a new handshake. So if this is correct, for the aforementioned Panasonic projectors for example, (which accept 1080i signals), you should include 1080i on your display settings, and the PS3 should detect 1080i as the maximum resolution (or maybe you select it manually?) of the display. Then the 1080 quality is sent to the projector, and the projector makes it 720 x 1280. either doing a good job (720 x 1280) or a little less good job (540 x 1280) (equivalent to about 624p x 1108 pixels) |
