Bit hard to discuss without giving away some of the key plot/character beats. But if you want to know a bit more, the film is based on the short story Barn Burning by Haruki Murakami (which itself is partly inspired by William Faulkner’s story of the same name).

I've not read "Barn Burning," though I do have the collection it's in (The Elephant Vanishes). I love Murakami, so I've been looking forward to seeing this film for some time. I doubt I'll get to see this in theaters, so this will be a day-one purchase for me.

I've been meaning to see this for a while, and was about to give up and VOD it off Amazon.
Glad to see it's getting a blu-ray release. Another on the same short list of "must see" foreign movies where I read about Burning, the Danish movie "Holiday," which also is frequently singled out as having beautiful photography, is DVD-only ![]() |

I got a chance to watch Burning, and one of the similarities I found with The Wailing that stood out was that the cinematography was phenomenal. And upon checking, the cinematography was done by the same person: Hong Kyung-pyo. Both are excellent thrillers for sure, but also different as well. Both films definitely have multiple layers of how people may interpret the film in their first viewing, but they're also both the type of movies that makes you keep wanting to think more about the film once it ends. I wonder if Burning will eventually get a Criterion release in a few years down the road.
