Default Blu-ray and VHS live happily together.

Quote:
Yes, it seems that old technologies never die… at least not if you pair them with newer technologies. The DMR-BR630V has a VHS/Blu-ray recorder combo.

Gizmodo says the unit has a 320GB hard drive and can write BDRs at six times speed. It also has the latest “MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 encoder” chips, HDMI and analog connections, and Panasonic’s Viera link technology. Of course, the machine will also allow you to dub all of your old VHS onto Blu-ray, or vice versa as well as standard-def DVD—if you want to party like it’s 1999 (or probably more like 1989).

One thing it doesn’t have: a U.S. release date. According to AV Watch, the DMR-BR630V is expected to hit in Japan on October 1. The price will be somewhere in the $1,450 range.

definition is irrelevant, it's what bitrate it's sampled at that determines recording length.
Blu-Ray is about 16-35mbs
DVD is about 6mbs
But broadcast standard definition Digital Betacam is 90mbs, so if it was uncompressed, you would take up more space than Blu Ray
HDCAM is more again, and HDCAM-SR is more than that.

Assuming you were doing DVD quality at 6mbs on a 25GB disc, you would get about 9 and a quarter hours.

I still use a Sony VHS VCR to record some shows - may as well, it still works!
It's only recording SDTV so no worries!

My laptops handle the DVR and cable HDTV/Blu-ray jobs.

hrmmmm... well it is not a horrible idea. But at that price I'd not imagine them selling to many of them.

Earlier this evening I realized how much I really and truly hate VHS. I actually felt nauseous when watching a tape the quality was so bad. VHS is not worthy to be in the same player as Blu-ray.

Onward and upward, upgrade and never look back! The future is Blu!

I would have thought most people would already have burnt their VHS collection onto DVDs by now with the wave of cheap VHS/DVD players/recorders a few years ago. Not really sure that this will take off too well. I don't see people who are still hording VHS tapes being willing to spend that much money to be able to transfer them to Blu instead of to DVD.

As bad as VHS quality might seem, i swear some vhs movies look better on vhs then they do on standard definition cable/sat.
