Default Need Help Confirming This

I'm on vacation visiting family and my uncle has an issue with his speakers he wants my help with. He's got everything run through a great surge protector but I don't think it has conditioning at all.

The problem as he describes it:

"When I'm watching anything with the volume up higher, when it has a quiet scene I hear a low clicking noise coming from the front right speaker"

Now he said he's already tried switching the wires (running the wire to the left channel... same problem with the left channel speaker then) and its still having this issue... I think a line conditioner should help unless there is a problem with the receiver itself.... Anyone got any other ideas I should try if this doesnt solve it?

Did he try running the right speaker off the left receiver channel, or did he just switch the wire used to hook up the left and right speakers?

If the right speaker is making the same sound whether hooked up as right or left, and with either speaker wire, you very likely have a damaged speaker.

Hopefully that made sence.

Try:
Right Speaker - Right Speaker Wire - to Right Receiver
Right Speaker - Right Speaker Wire - to Left Receiver
Right Speaker - Left Speaker Wire - to Right Receiver
Right Speaker - Left Speaker Wire - to Left Receiver

If you get it in all 4 cases, and only on that one speaker, I'd say it is a damaged speaker.

By saying he has the same problem when he switches the wire from the front right to front left, do you mean he now hears the same noise in the left speaker, or still the right?

Sorry... yeah when switching the left and right speaker wires (on the speaker end) the sound switches speakers

So its either the wire itself or the right output on the receiver

So the next step would be to use another piece of wire and test the right speaker with the right channel with a different wire.

only issue with that is the wiring is all in-wall so if we are to test the wire I think it would be best left to his electrician so he can run some tests on the equipment and wires before deciding to pull it all out

Even better, you could do the test I described, but just from the receiver to the speaker. That will possibly eliminate the receiver as the issue as well as the wire in the wall.

Maybe the in-wall wire is too close or crossing a power line?

I guess you'll know when you try a different wire direct from the receiver to the speaker. Good luck.

Well the house is now about 4 years old, so I wouldnt think that would be the case, being that its a recent issue... but if it is the wire the electrician should be out there this week anyways
