Default SimpleTech 500GB external drive question

Hi,

My Bj's savings book has a SimpleTech 500GB external hard drive advertized under $100. I would take this apart and put the drive in my PS3 for a upgrade of hard drive space... but I don't know if it's the right kind of drive inside.

I've heard of others doing this. One thing about this is you can re-use the old drive (in my case 60GB) in the shell and so you still can keep using it.

So... Does anyone know what type of drive is in these SimpleTech external drives?

This may possibly be the one you're referring to Brian, but could be wrong:

http://review.zdnet.com/hard-drives/...-32411827.html

From the article, its a 3.5 harddrive so no this will not go into the PS3 as the PS3 takes a 2.5 eSATA notebook drive. I personally would go with the Seagate drives, with maybe the Western Digital 2.5 drives as a follow-up choice just because of my good reliability experience with them. I would steer away from Maxtor drives, had one too many of those fail on me previously (on the PC side).

But it should be a good drive if you want to use it as an external since its USB 2.0

Thanks,

I realized that a 250GB Seagate external drive we have for backing up the laptop is only using 45GB so I'm going to switch things around. I know the seagate drive works in the PS3 and the upgrade will be free.

It's going to be work though moving the data around but should be fun to have a 250GB PS3.

Heheh! Good luck Brian. I switched out my 60GB for a Seagate Scorpio 250GB. She's down to about 145GB what with all the demos and trailers, so need to start moving some trailers off
