Default HDMI vs. Optical Out

I currently don't have a receiver that has a HDMI input, and I'm in the market for a blu-ray player. What audio will I be able to play using the optical out instead of the HDMI?

^^ Which are still a nice enough audio upgrade over "normal" DTS and DD.

Actually, full bitrate DTS is 1536Kbps and it rocks. Some of the early Dreamworks DVDs had it, and then they all but dissapeared. Even most of the Superbit DTS discs only have half-bitrate DTS tracks.

I use an impact acoustics optical cable from my Sony BDP-S1, through my Onkyo Receiver. I get excellent audio sound. A huge upgrade from doing the same thing with my old Denon upconverting DVD player. Blu-Ray comes with enhanced sound that you would be hard pressed to hear the difference from Optical vice HDMI.

Same as DVD-Audio: copy protection. Most new SACDs are hybrids with CD tracks, though

if you are in the market for a receiver with HDMI do not buy SONY'S STRDA5200ES. It is expensive and it sucks

Does anyone recommend this reciever for decoding next generation audio? (Sony STR-DG800) Is this a good reciever to run an hdmi cable from ps3 to reciever, and and hdmi cable from the reciever to the tv and get pcm lossless audio?

I was also looking at a couple of revievers at the sonystyle link.

They have two different types of recievers I was curious about. One of them is called and ES reciever and they cost more. However, they say nothing about HDMI connectivity. Does anyone know the bottom line in the difference of the ES recievers and the regular HDMI reciever?

I bought a HDMI monster cable that cost $100. (Sony Playstation 3 Monster Cable HDMI Cable (PS3HDMI-1080p)6.5ft-2m ) Which now believe is a rip off.

When the 1.3 HDMI recievers come out, will I need some type of 1.3 HDMI cable to take advantage of the new technology?

That reciever will not decode audio over HDMI. The HDMI ports are for video switching only. You will need to get the step up from that one, the STR-DG1000 which will decode audio over HDMI. It retails for about $799, but I'm sure you can find it cheaper online. There are other recievers that can be found cheaper that will decode audio over HDMI and do video switching.

No you will not. That cable will be fine.

Question pioneer receiver

I have a pioneer VSX-82TXS. I have the pioneer blu-ray player and thps3 coneccted via hdmi. But the guys at 6th ave said I needed the optical cable for sound. I also have the sattalite connected via hdmi. They all go to the receiver. Now when I take the optical out of the ps3 or the b-r I cannot get anysound. Is there y I could get the better quality sound from HDMI?

IIRC you can use hdmi with your VSX-82TXS for sound. It's the model #'s VSX-80TXV and VSX-81TXV that require optical for sound.
