Default Updating Firmware

I just bought a Sony Blu Ray s300 - have yet to set it up. I have been reading about the Firmware improving the performance. My question is this. Do I have to upgrade my firmware in order? Like if my machine has version 3.2 - can I upgrade straight to 3.8 or do I have to upgrade each firmware release up to 3.8 to get all the functionality?

You should be able to go straight to the most recent FW version, skipping those in between.

It tells you on Sony's website. It gives you step by step instructions. You have to go to the settings, and then click tv type and press the blue button. Or something really close to that.. LOL

Man, you're working me too hard! I don't even own this player!

From the website (http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu...3412&os_id=7):
Check Current Firmware Version
  1. Power on the television and make sure it is tuned to the inputs to which the BDP-S300 player is connected.
  2. Power on the BDP-S300 Blu-ray Disc™ player.
  3. If the player starts to play a disc, press the "STOP" button and wait until the blue Sony Blu-ray Disc screen is displayed on the television before proceeding.
  4. On the remote control (RMT-B101A), press the SYSTEM MENU button.
  5. At the "System Menu" screen, use the arrow keys on the remote control to highlight "Setup" and then press the ENTER button.
  6. At the "Setup" screen, use the arrow keys on the remote control to highlight "Video Setup" and then press the ENTER button.
  7. Use the arrow keys on the remote control to highlight "TV Type" and then press the ENTER button.
  8. On the remote control, press "BLUE" button.
  9. The firmware version currently installed on the BDP-S300 will be listed on the television screen. If the version number is 3.80 or higher, it is not necessary to install this firmware update.

Thanks RUR.

I'm rocking 3.70. So I could upgrade to 3.8.

Yes i have the same player too. I called sony and they are sending me a firmware update disk in the mail...like 5 business days.
You can do it yourself...I just figured...its free and sony will send me the disk...why not...lol...Alot of reviews say this player is slow at loading...i mean its not the snap of a finger but i dont feel its slow at all...loads and upscales the regular dvds fast...takes a little time..Like 1 minute at most to load blu rays...the look and sound is very nice..I have a 52 inch samsung 1080p Lcd
with this player. And recommend it.

Yeah, I'll probably upgrade myself this week.

I watched my first blu ray movie - Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - last night and WOW, it was great. And I'm only running 1080i on a 27 inch. I can't wait to upgrade to a bigger 1080p LCD.

The only annoying load time is the initial, I'm turning it on load time. It plays the movies super fast.

Thanks again RUR, you are most helpful.

I am debating buying an S300 or S350 for my RV, there will be no ethernet, so I'm leaning towards the S300 on sale/clearance.
I understand you can update the firmware by downloading it, burning it to a CD and inserting it in the player. Seems straightforward.
I have a MacBook runing OSX 10.4.4
the sony site asks for an operatiing system? all windows?
if your just downloading a file, and burning a CD, seems this would be irrelevant?

The file is a windows exe file that contains and ISO image. The image is extracted by running the exe. You Mac OS has boot camp so you can run windows if you have a copy. Just follow the instructions on boot camp and you will have a dual boot system, provided you CPU is an Intel based CPU.
