Hi folks. I'm wondering how upconverting works when you have a blu ray player, receiver, and TV that all upconvert? Which one takes precedence or do they all do some conversion to achieve the best result? Can you configure which one does the conversion? Thanks.

It's pretty much under your control.
The display is always going to output at its native resolution. If you have a 1080p set, it will upscale any input less than 1080. That happens without user intervention and you can't tell the display to change resolutions. Players do not allow for upscaling DVDs over the component outputs. You get a 480 output and that's it. With HDMI, most players force the user to set a single resolution for all sources. You set the output to 1080p and the player upscales any source less than that. So, if you want to do the upscaling somewhere else, you would need to adjust the player set-up when switching from Blu-ray to DVD, which is not very practical. A few players offer "source direct", which outputs whatever resolution is on the disc. That works well for people who want to do the upscaling downstream from the player - people with video processors, for example. The receiver sits in the middle. AVRs with video processors can be set to pass through whatever resolution arrives from the source or to do the upscaling. But, if your player is already sending 1080p, then there isn't much point. The AVR won't upscale it again. If you have separate DVD player, then you can decide where you want to do the upscaling. It will only be one or the three devices. Your choice. |

Your Onkyo receiver does not have the Anchor Bay video processor but the Faroudja DCDi Edge.
* Your Panny BD player is set to 1080P, and it will do a good job too with DVDs. * Your Sammy TV is already receiving 1080P from your BD player. * And your Onkyo receiver is set to Video "Passthrough". ~ This is all from the HDMI connection. And from the Cable TV or Satellite TV, or XBox 360, you'll have to check if your receiver or TV does a better job. To check for your receiver, set it to 1080P. To check for your TV, set your receiver to "Passthrough". Just pick the one you prefer visually. Last edited by LordoftheRings; 10-09-2010 at 02:36 AM. |
