Just so you know:

There is no 60 gig system {so far as I know there's just a no harddrive arcade, the 20 gig whateveritscalled and the 120 gig elite}

As well, if you're going to buy a system for your son, try to buy one that you won't have the headache when it breaks down in a few months of constant use.

Go with the Ps3 or the Wii.

Depending on the age range of your son, I'd suggest a Wii for smaller kids {keeps 'em active too which is a bonus} or the PS3 for anyone ages 13+

Don't be fooled by a price cut, a system like the 360 is all flash no delivery.

Logan

There is a 60gb system, that is the new standard pro system and replaces the 20gb. The only real difference between the arcade and the pro is the harddrive and the controller. Now the arcade does come with a memory card, but if its something you are planning to use for years to come, id go with the pro and get the harddrive. Also the pro comes with wireless controllers and the arcade has a wired controller. The 60gb systems just came out within the past month so they should all be falcon systems.

You need to be concerned which ones have the new Jasper chipset. The Falcons still break down.

Wait and buy one with a Jasper if you don't want to deal with the "red rings" (hopefully).

I could be wrong of course, but I believe the Jasper motherboard is in new consoles, but certainly at a minimum they will be falcons. Significantly improved over the 2005 iteration.

I'd recommend getting the 199 arcade (comes with 5 games on a disc) and picking up a used 20gb hd and using the saved 50 to get an extra controller and hdmi cable from monoprice.

edit: that's really weird, I swear I didn't see that post from detroit sports fan when I posted this??

Ah. Probably best to wait until mid-october than, to let the falcons dry up.

unknown, but the falcon was a signifigant improvement as it cut down on the heat produced, and moved that heat in a better way. The jasper is supposed to be even better. My current 3 360s are all falcons and ive had no problem with them. 1 of them, i use for about 5 hours per day and it runs fine.

I bought a 360 one year after its release and it died after a year and a half. I was fortunate enough to have the foresight to buy an extended warranty. MS replaced mine w/a new one, presumably with the new chipset.
I have both a PS3 and an XBOX360, but I prefer the 360 as a gaming machine. My PS3 is my BD player, except for MGS4. Whichever console you purchase I would suggest an extended warranty. Also, don't bother with the Arcade version. Get one w/a hard drive. Have fun getting your new console.

Its typically a heat issue inside the system, it wouldnt necessarily feel hot on the outside, or rather, hotter than normal. The early systems were pretty bad, but on the average, the newer systems are much better. As a former EB manager, i still keep in contact with other managers, and they have told me that 360 exchanges/returns have dropped off considerably in the past year from what they were.

There is a way to tell, im not sure what it is though. Ive seen things on different forums that point out how to tell if it has what chip, etc. Google search id say. I havent really kept up with that since i havent had a problem yet. Since Jasper isnt out yet, afaik, i dont know how you would tell what has what. Once it ships and someone can verify, you will see posts on how to identify it based on lot numbers on the serial and such.

Yes as long as it's the gamertag that originally downloaded them.

Yeah, theres even a tool now on xbox.com where you can re-assign what console they are attached to, that way you dont get the response to verify it, if you move it to a new console. But, everything is assigned to your gamertag, so if you bought something in the past, you dont need to rebuy it, just redownload it.

i went to the web site and all they asked was email and password. i use the same for everything so it worked. is that i.d. the same? its been over a year. cant remember all these details. it its not the same as the web site, i should be able to recover it shouldnt i? the last 360 i had i sold and never looked back. till now....
dont know what happened to the stuff on the hd. it went from ups to gamestop. if by chance someone had gotten my info from the harddrive, i should be able to still get the stuff i purchased and change passwords?

op: sorry for highjacking
