Default Universal: What is their deal?

Ok, what is up with Universal with Blu-Ray releases?
All three of these movies (I want badly) were released on HDDVD but haven't been transferred to Blu-Ray yet:
- Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas
- Lost in Translation
- Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Since they have already been released on an HD format shouldn't they be out by now or soon at least? (although, I saw Lost in Translation on HDDVD and was NOT impressed, it looked like DVD). Could it be that maybe since they were released on HDDVD that they are kind of held to that brand until a contract runs out or something?

Thanks for any help!

It is going to take a little while for all of the prior HD DVD releases make it to Blu-ray. However, Universal has been making very god progress. Looking foward to the upcoming BD release of Eastern Promises and American Gangster.

Do you want a crappy HD DVD port? Give them time. Universal has done some good work.

Universal may be working on a new higher-quality encode for the BD releases of those movies. Also, they may already have their upcoming release slots filled with different titles, and don't want to flood the market all at once.

I think they are focused on movies that have a bigger fan base and that will sell well. Those three don't fit into either category. Especially since I'm sure they have their HD DVD sales numbers for those movies.

I actually think that Universal's done pretty well for a group that didn't even commit to BD until February.

In fact, they've done an incredible job just to be able to enter the marketplace as a novice.

every title released by universal so far has been top notch considering they just started releasing a little while ago. The list of titles that are set for the rest of the year look great. I will get them all. You have to remember that the studios are cramming the rep lines with all the summer movies plus high profile catalog titles. The ones you list should be out by next year. Bill has states that the studios plan to open the flood gates in 2009 so just be patient

I have the HD DVD and the DVD and trust me, the HD DVD looks miles better than the DVD. Lost in Translation has some very grainy shots, including the opening one, but the transfer is quite faithful to my memory of the theatrical presentation. Even if Universal does a new encode for the Blu-ray, I doubt that it would look much different, because of the way it was shot.

"it looked like DVD" is one of the more absurd statements about any hi-def transfer. i've never seen a BD or HD DVD that looked like a DVD, unless the source material itself was lower than 1080p (like 28 Days Later).

Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas is one of my favorite movies too, but the HD DVD version is really crappy So I hope they re-do it before the put it out on BD.

Hm, okay.
Maybe saying it looked like DVD was harsh but by no stretch did it look HD to me. There are many shots in the film that could have been done beautifully that shouldn't have been affected by how they were shot. Grainy-ness I could understand for poorly lit scenes but other than that, no, the way it was shot has nothing to do with having poor quality. I also remember the audio being a little schizophrenic also.

In Germany, they are releasing Fear and loathing in Las Vegas on October
27th. Don't know about the region encoding though.
