im just wondering how many months/years will it take to get at least some of the more popular/good cartoons out there (not necessarily 3D) on blu rays.
im talking stuff like hanna barbera classics or american "anime" like avatar: the last airbender. I'd kill for a flintstones/jetsons whole blu boxset in the future. ![]() |

But me down for any of the Bruce Timm DC Comic stuff, Venture Bros, and Looney Tunes on Blu-ray!!! I would love to X-Men from the 90's as well, but that never even came out on DVD.
ps - I keep going back and furth about buy the upcoming Batman: TAS Complete Boxset because I am afraid it will come out on Blu. |

I would love to see the 90's version of Spider-Man and X-Men series on blu but Disney and Marvel are arguing over the rights to the show last I heard? I also would like to see Batman Beyond on it looks good on my hd tv on the dvd sets that I have I know it would look good on blu. Others I would like to see : Ninja Turtles 80's series , Duck tales , Transformers, I could be here all day naming stuff.

One of the problems is that many of the shows listed only have standard definition masters and would not really benefit from a Blu-ray release. Even now there are many animated shows that don't have true high definition masters. Many of the early seasons of the Simpsons would look no better than the current dvds for instance.

If a cartoon was done using traditional handpainted cels then said cels were shot on film. If the film is still available, it can be remastered in HD. A number of anime TV series have been remastered like this and released on DVD in Japan, and most of these will probably be released on Blu-ray eventually. Some Blu-ray releases of classic TV anime series will also finally be coming out later this year, including Dancouga and Z Gundam (also Bubblegum Crisis and Riding Bean, which were OVA series). The Transformers cartoon was also remastered from film for its DVD release in the US, but I don't know if they scanned the film in at high enough resolution to do a Blu-ray release as the DVDs started coming out over 5 years ago.
If a cartoon was animated with digitally painted cels (like most anything from the last 10 years not made for an HD channel) is it likely to not look much better than the DVDs if released on Blu, but even then it will look somewhat better since you can get much higher bitrates with Blu-ray and use AVC or VC1, and professional upscaling will always be better than upscaling in real-time in the player or TV. Some anime series have been released in Japan on Blu-ray like this, and the general consensus is that they do indeed look better than the DVDs. The "AIR" TV series was such an upscaled Blu-ray release, and it happened to be my first Blu purchase, before I even had a PS3. It does look better than the DVDs (there's a bit of jaggies on the characters though, but upscaling techniques have since improved), and it was also given a newly mixed 5.1 LPCM soundtrack when the original DVDs only had stereo so that's another way a Blu-ray can make an improvement. But I'd only buy upscales nowadays if it's a series I really like, AIR is a really good series and it was one of the first anime Blu-ray releases in Japan so I had to get it.
