Default Surround Sound: Checklist

Well, I will be leaving bright and early tomorrow to go pick up my new audio equipment at Fry's: a Sony STR-DG720 receiver and the Polk RM6750 speaker system!

I plan on buying:
  1. Sony STR-DG720 receiver
  2. Polk RM6750 speaker system
  3. 16-gauge speaker wire
(I already own 3 HDMI cords)

Am I missing anything? I'd be really bummed if I got home and figured out I needed something else!

Thanks for the help!

Good idea! I'll be sure to take a look at them!

What type of cord should I buy to connect the subwoofer to the receiver (or, is it included)?

I am not sure if it is included or not, probably not. It is just a standard RCA cable.

Your pretty much covered. Speaker stands and wall mounts if your going that route. Banana plugs if you want. Power conditioner/protector the accessories can be endless. But as for a basic setup your set.

That sounds simple enough!

I was looking at the Polk manual online and I saw this diagram:

Is there a difference between L and R when connecting the RCA cable? Also, is there an added bonus if I use a splitter to connect both?

I don't use a Y splitter either, it shouldn't be necessary...

the splitter would just be taking the same audio info and pass it through both inputs.

the .1 channel is not location specific.

so no splitter is necessary.

Ahh, I understand.

Once I have everything in place, is there a specific audio setting I must use, or will the PS3 automatically detect what my system is capable of?

Once you go throught the PS3 setup again it should detect everything fine. When I set mine up I reset all the PS3 settings by holding down the PS3 power button for a few seconds until it beeped. Then I powered it back on and did the PS3 setup. What movie are you going to watch first?

I would also recomend Shoot Em Up. While alot of people didn't like the over the top action and one liners, the 7.1 DTS MA track is unquestionably awesome.

Well, it's all hooked up and playing Transformers as we speak!

Now, when I skip a chapter or turn off the video suddenly, my speakers make a strange sound (almost like a electric surge, or sudden "tiss", that only lasts a millisecond). Is this normal?

Fixed. I switched from an optical to a HDMI audio input and it stopped!
