Why is there a separate 2D Disc in 3D combo packs? All of my 3D discs seemingly play fine in 2D on my non-3D player and television. Is the 3D disc fully converting to 1080p in 2D when showing just the left or right eye view?

Having a seperate 2D option even on the same disc makes sure it is displayed properly. |

![]() Another reason for the separate 2D is to include the special features. The MVC encoding for 3D takes up more room on a disc than a standard AVC encode, so if the studios aren't going for the single-disc 2D/3D option (which you see usually for short-ish movies) then they go for 3D barebones and 2D + extras. |

Sometimes the 3D disc is authored specifically to boost brightness to compensate for the 3D glasses.
If a 3D hybrid disc is authored, one of the following two results will happen. One is a 3D video that's too dim, or a 2D that's over saturated. A separate 3D disc is actually a good idea. |

Slightly off-topic, but on a 3D-capable player, I've figured out a (probably well-known) workaround to play 3D-only discs on a 2D-only display (even if the disc is required to play in 3D only). All I have to do is switch my Oppo BDP-103 to "Forced" 3D output, then start the disc, and switch the 3D setting back to "Off", after which the discs play entirely in 2D. This works well for Disney-authored 3D discs, because the starting Disney logo is always 2D, so I can pause it there, and view the setup menu. Any 3D picture is a black screen with audio only.
I only just recently realized this, and it may only work because I have a player like the Oppo and/or a 3D-capable A/V receiver, but it means I can check out and watch the AVC left eye of those pesky 3D-only discs , which is nice. |

I have to state I actually prefer 3D on the same disc and the transfer will be the same. Many 3D titles are washed out due to decreased saturation or poor black levels. Not a fan of the monochromatic appearance. |
