Default Blu-ray coming to Mac

Quote:
Digg.com's Kevin Rose has posted a new blog entry and YouTube video claiming to have knowledge of upcoming iPod updates with a significant number of details:

- Revamp of entire iPod line.
- Small cosmetic changes to Touch, Nano to see significant redesign (see above)
- iPods to see fairly large price drops to distance itself from the $199 iPhone.
- iPod touch 2.1 software, iPhone to get update very soon after.
- iTunes 8.0 ("it's a big update w/new features").
- All of this coming in the next 2-3 weeks.
- Blu-Ray support coming in Mac OS X 10.5.6

repost, but thanks all the same! Should be good if it's true.

blu-ray support doesn't mean bluray built-in, so not really a big deal

Well he does say Macbook Pros shipping with Blu Ray drives.... I am just looking forward to DVD Studio Pro doing Blu Ray, since it's the best DVD authoring program out there.

Can't imagine why it wouldn't work over USB or firewire. Both have much more bandwidth than Blu-ray requires.

I am just going to get a couple of external BD drives. Well one thing is guaranteed, and that's that it is coming. When? who knows, hopefully sooner than later, and whether its 10.5.6 who but Steve Jobs knows?

I thought Apple was one of the original companies on the BDA...

I wonder what takes so long for them to actually put it together with something the build...

Steve decided that optical media was dead. That simple. If you ran the immensely successful iTunes store (and the far less successful MacBook Air), you'd wish optical media would die a quick death, too. Unfortunately (for him), his vision of the future isn't shaping up the way he initially saw it. HD DVD is dead (the Microsoft-backed format), and there's little choice, at this point, but to properly support Blu-ray. If Apple wants to continue the success of their pro apps (Final Cut Studio, etc), they MUST properly support Blu-ray playback and authoring now that the competing format is officially deceased.

Of course, with Warner/New Line (and eventually Sony) releasing Blu-ray discs with digital copies that don't work on Macs or iPods, Apple cannot be at all happy with certain other Blu-ray supporting companies, but FINALLY adding proper Blu-ray support to their machines may help.

If it's FINALLY true, great. But it seems odd that a leak didn't come out of Matsushita or Optiarc that a large order for 9.5mm Blu-ray optical drives had been placed. Still, if they managed to keep even that quiet... awesome... and about time.

It was reported a while back that Sony were developing the drives for Apple. But if Apple (the customer) as part of the agreement requested the supplier to keep it hush, why would they go running to the press?

why do i keep reading this crap after the Macbook Air was released? Just cos of that one product and wanting to do digital downloads, all of a sudden they are pulling the plug on all optical media. I guess my next Macbook Pro and MacPro won't even have DVD drives. Actually I might just add, they are dropping computers altogether. Yeah, they are only going to make iPhones now.

"LEAK"
No one would have to go running, some grunt could mouth-off and we would see it plastered across the interwebs.

I sure hope this rumor is true... I have friends that will be happy - finally!

My question is what time-frame we're talking about here. I mean, developers are currently working with 10.5.5 and I personally doubt we'll see that released AND 10.5.6 released to the general public within the next month or two for the rumored September product update.

My six-week old 24" iMac deserves an external BD drive with movie playback support!
