Default Standalone player sales to triple in 2008 and double in 2009

That according to DisplaySearch, as reported by Video Business.

Quote:
Worldwide consumers will buy 2.38 million Blu-ray set-top players this year and 5.31 million next year, up from about 700,000 in 2007, said Paul Gagnon, DisplaySearch director of North America TV research, at the conference. With such a surge in standalone players, Sony's PlayStation 3 consoles, which include Blu-ray players, will no longer be the biggest selling Blu-ray hardware source by 2010, Gagnon said.

Thanks providing real news Grubert. I have definetly noticed an increased demand for standalone players. The PS3 is great, but standalone players are the key.

It's about time that Bluray hardware pick up pace and get carried by lower prices momentum. I'm curious to see figures in January after the holidays.

This sounds a bit high for 2008.

There were only about 1.3 Million standalones sold since inception (in North America) as of CEDIA '08.

Of course with the right pricing/bundling it's not impossible.

I would really like to know these analysts assumptions as to why we will be experiencing this growth

-how low will player prices go in 09? 2010?
-what hardware components will show what ( and how much) decreases in manufacturing cost?
-is this growth mentioned pertaining to just america or WW?

I wish that max would show up and give an educated spiel about this, he knows his stuff.
