Default Rick Wright of Pink Floyd...RIP

Just heard on the radio that he died after a short battle with cancer. RIP, a great contributer to the music of Pink Floyd.

Hmm sorry to hear that. I am not a great fan of Pink Floyd but I was very impressed with one song and music video. I think we all know which one.

WHAT!

Oh man.... WOW.

I'm glad I made it to DGs last solo tour and glad RW was part of the band so I had a last performance.

I'll certainly buy the upcoming DG live set with RW now.

Wow........

EDIT - Wow,.. it begins to sink in and the shock is replaced but just recognition of the fact.
Back when I first got interested in PF it was like 86 or something and I thought I missed the whole thing. But then I went to 2 RW shows, 9 Pink Floyd shows (without RW), and a DG concert. I took what I could get while some people would say... oh,.. well,.. that's not the whole band. I wasn't one of the lucky ones who saw the live 8 reunion live but I'm glad for what I was able to experience of PF live. They are the only band I like more than the Beatles. (In other words,.. my favorite.)

Very sad news indeed. As with the Beatles, NOW there is good reason why there won't be a reunion. So in retrospective, the LIVE 8 gig was like a last gift from the PF guys.

Richard Wright was a most talented musician, and his work in Pink Floyd is part of their trademark.

From now on, THE GREAT GIG IN THE SKY will be sadder... :-(

Although they've been one of my favorite bands since the Syd Barrett era, I saw them in concert only once - at the Hollywood Bowl in 1972. A very memorable evening....

Sad, indeed. Syd, himself, passed away in 2006.

Default R.i.p.

It was incredible to see Rick on Dave Gilmour's "Remember that Night" BD. The very first note struck when "Echoes" began drove a chill through me.

This news makes me honestly feel very sad. Pink Floyd's my fav band, and I feel privileged to have seen the Gilmour/Mason/Wright incarnation twice, with A Waters solo concert as well.

I was absolutely STUNNED to see them on stage together for Live 8 last year, and even more shocked to see Roger round everyone up on that stage for a bow. My hopes for a reunion concert were reignited, but it seems that's not going to happen.

Rick is, already, greatly missed...

Shine On...

The Doc.

Yeah, I'm surprised how sad it actually is making me feel. Any future incarnation of Pink Floyd will never be the same. So at the risk of hyperbole, Pink Floyd has died as well. It's the silencing of a great voice of Rock - like what will happen when Ringo and Paul are gone. That really bums me out man...

Indeed a very sad day and a great loss. Like many of you I was lucky enough to see PF live in concert during their "Animals" Tour and was absolutely blown away by the music and the performance. I can still remember that huge pink pig hovering over the stadium (Olympic Stadium in Montreal, Quebec). My then brother-in-law and I were quite a ways back, but we were smart enough to bring binoculars, so we got a real good close-up view.

PF will always be my favourite band and in dedication to RW, I'm going to listen to PF's records in succession. It will be a treat as I haven't cued up Atom Heart Mother and UmmaGumma for quite a while.

Thanks for the memories RW!

Quote "Olympic Stadium in Montreal, Quebec"

Oh man,... Do you know what happened at that exact concert?

Good thing you were far back. If you look it up, that night was special in PF history.

Roger Waters was frustrated by the stadium setting and didn't think he was making the proper connection with the crowd and then one guy was scratching to get the the very front of the stage and RW spit in his face.

Later reflections of his feelings of dis-connect from the fans at that very show paved the way and provided the inspiration for "The Wall".

I'll go dig up a link...

Edit - A nice review from another person who was there...

"When the band did tour in early '77 their set consisted of WYWH as well as two constantly evolving songs from what was to be Animals. They released Animals on January 23, 1977. During this tour, Roger Waters received his impetus for the creation of The Wall. The pure greed of doing stadium shows sickened him. The last show of this tour was when Roger actually spat on a fan in contempt."

http://www.bjornetjenesten.dk/Roger%..._biography.htm

"This is largely inspired by their 1977 tour promoting the album Animals, with regards to an incident where Roger Waters' frustration with someone climbing the netting that separated the band from the audience reached a point where Waters spat in the fan's face. This led him to lament that such a wall exists, which in turn inspired him to base their next album on the theme of isolation from others."

..."In 1977, Pink Floyd were promoting Animals with their In The Flesh tour. The final night of the tour, in Montreal, Canada, Waters spat in the face of a fan who was trying to climb over the netting between the audience and the stage, and get up with the band. The incident later helped inspire Waters to develop the idea of The Wall.[1]"

You're welcome
