Default old dvd's

Hi guys

Have a general newbie question that I have not been able to find a generally simple answer for yet throughout my browsing and searching on this site and google. You guessed it, I am a proud new owner of my first bluray machine.

What kind of options do I have when it comes to transferring my old dvd's to bluray/hd? Do I need to rebuild my collection or is there some way to burn previously purchased dvd's to play in super high def on my new lcd?

Go easy on me pls, i'm green in the face and just thrilled to have my player and viewer.

You can't transfer your DVD to blue yourself. The studios do that with the original source film. You will have to purchase the movie again if you want to watch it in high definition.

But good news! Your new player should be able to upconvert your old DVDs to make them look a lot better than a regular DVD player would on your fat new TV. Pop one in and see for yourself! I still use my upconverting DVD player for all my regular DVDs and I only use my blueray player for blues. Pretty sweet.

Works for me. Thanks for the quick reply. Few movies I will probably rebuy, and I don't mine doing it being these movies are well worth the extra cash. First on my list of course will be the movie Sunshine. Well off to watch the dark knight for the 4th time. Thanks again.

Default I have used Hastings

Hastings buys old DVD's. They don't give much however, they do give something. I figure something is better than nothing.

I could never hawk my dvd collection. Most of it is collector editions. Would just feel dirty.

I have several thousand DVD's and it would be costly to repurchase them on Blu-ray and certain DVD's especially sports, import or anime-related will probably not be released on Blu-ray. Also, depends on your viewability and how often you want to watch the movies you have on DVD. And also, the DVD's that you own, probably have more content than some of their Blu-ray counterparts and I wouldn't be surprised if you see those older Blu-rays re-released with more content in the near future (ie. "T2") with better picture quality and much more extra content.

You can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear. How would copying low rez videos to BD suddenly make then HD? Besides, your Blu-Ray player will also play your DVD's and CD's.

Did you ever hear the term that you can't make a silk purse out of sows ear.
Todays blue ray players will up-convert your DVDs, but not to the full resolution that a blue ray disc has to offer. If you plan to change over, try to save it for yor favoite movies. You might want to check High Def digest & this site for reviews on picture & sound quality befor spending your hard earned cash. Be warned, there is a few blue ray discs out there that are not much better than the DVD version.
