Question So who's winning?

this is not a flame thread or anything of that sort, i'm just curious to know who's ahead, BD or HD-DVD? i heard on some other site that DB is out selling HD-DVD, is this true? are there any official figures? i figure the PS3 has something to do with this since it helped penetrate the market.

Blu-ray is beating HD DVD by 2:1 and growing. Blu-ray has also surpassed the total HD DVD disc sales.

Blu-ray is outselling hd-dvd at last report 2:1, but many expect that to be 3:1 very soon. Blu-ray is also winning in sales since inception, despite hd-dud's headstart.

Sales among standalone players (i.e. not including the ps3) are now about equal, and with lower priced blu-ray players that should go completely in favor of blu-ray as well.

Any hd-dud fanboi that wants to dispute these facts needs to also be reminded that the year is 2007, the earth is not flat and orange juice is still orange in color.

Are these figures for the US and Canada or world wide? March will be interesting, but I think Casino Royale is going to cause a blip in March, so will not be an acurate picture unless figures for that movie are published. April should see the impact of the PS3 on world wide sales.

Those are US and Canada figures.

But I can tell you that Blu-ray has flattened HD-DVD in Japan (a crucial electronics market) and in the UK (my territory) I only hear talk of Blu-ray.

I think this war will rage on indefinitely because both camps have very deep pockets and it seems that consumer support is 50/50 and many people support both formats. Fortunately for the consumer this war is forcing down prices while continually improving the quality of the products. If Universal starts supporting Blu-ray, then Blu-ray gains a huge advantage. IMO however, HD-DVD will not go away any time soon because of the deep pockets and the large consumer base supporting the format. My support remains exclusively in the Blu-ray camp.

Just North America.

In Japan Blu-ray is destroying HD DVD (Nov/Dec was 96% hardware sales in BD's favour). Top 10 on amazon.co.jp is ~500 for BD and ~4000 for HD DVD. In other words, BD has already won in Japan.

Figures for Europe show such absolutely tiny disc sales (< 14K total in the UK for HD DVD) that really it could be argued that neither format has really launched there. On PS/3 release day in UK + Europe, Blu-ray movie discs sales will permanently surpass HD DVD. Hence, that's why it has been endless anti-PS/3 propaganda lately. They are desperate.

Does anyone have a link or a picture of sales? Such as something that would be used in a sig. I want to show some of my friends some facts to shut them up.

Thanks.

Default The Departed

Does anyone know the sales figures for The Departed? Since it was released in both formats, it should be a good indicator of who's winning.

I think the Blu-ray version is ahead. Check the Amazon Blu-ray vs. HD-DVD thread for it.

In other news, the statistics for Japan show new RECORD LOWS for HD-DUD!!!

http://nolist.jp/bdvshddvd/

Blu-ray has jumped up from -900 to -739 after a few hours BUT LOOK AT HD-DUD :

It has now falled to -6000 again :P

The top HD-DVD title (some documentary from NHK) FELL from 2000th place to the 4000th place level

This are teh entartainmens!!!

Last week Casino royale was 42 on Amazon today is 32 ,maybe the most smashing ever titles has been hitting around and for a while crashing position after position and still are we going asking ourseleves who is winning,of Course Blu-ray is winning by miles......this is only an amazon what about others sites and in superstore what will happened once this title is online .Hey you Universal and to whom still thinking that Blu-ray is a looser format that check blu-ray sales by next week and of course releasing blu-ray worldwide.

Your joking right? Blu-ray = the BDA which has infinitely deep pockets.
HD-DVD = Toshiba which doesn't have deep pockets. I'm willing to bet that they have already spent as much on HD-DVD as they are going to.

Right now the only money going into HD-DVD is coming from M$ handouts. Eventually(within this year) Toshiba shareholders and investors are just going to say "no more" to HD-DVD and Toshiba will cave under the pressure and give up on the format war. I'm sure M$ will want to continue to support HD-DVD but it will become hard to justify wasting money on a dead format.

The consumer base is fairly small for HD-DVD and is getting smaller every day with all the people switching over to Blu-ray. I would hardly consider consumer support to be 50/50. Most if not all of the interest in HD-DVD died the moment Blu-ray launched. If support was 50/50 HD-DVD would be selling just as well as Blu-ray but that is not the case.

Blu-ray is now out selling HD-DVD 3:1 and has done in 3 months what took HD-DVD 9 months to do. It’s rather obvious that more consumers support Blu-ray over HD-DVD. This war will end fairly soon. Toshiba simply doesn’t have the money to run this war and they will not take M$ handouts forever.

In Japan, Blu-ray STILL leads over HD-DVD in number of titles (in the currently available, pre-order and total categories).

HD-DUD can't make a dent yet (even after they've launched FIFA 2007 World Cup titles on their format)
