Default Who owns the Apple TV?

I finally decided to purchase the Apple TV 160GB version yesterday. I didn't get it to replace my Blu-Ray player by no means, Blu-Ray is top notch. I got this to replace my DVD collection for those DVDs that currently are not available on Blu-Ray. I wasn't sure how good the DVD to .m4v Apple TV ready conversions would look, specifically compared to the actual disc. But I am amazed. For the most part, they look exactly, if not better than the DVD disc presentation. This was definitely worth the purchase. And while I'm just purchasing Blu-Ray movies, this is a great addition to my home theater setup to view my old DVDs located on 1 device.

Yep, I got one too. I settled for the 40gig version b/c I mostly just use it to rent movies (also to d/l TV shows since I don't have regular cable). Obviously it's not bluray quality, but it's definitely good. I'd say at least as good as compressed cable TV HD. Mostly, it's the convenience that makes it well worth it. A few clicks and you're watching a movie within minutes. Beats the heck out of driving to Blockbuster. Only downside is you sometimes have to wait for content. I'm sure that will improve over time though.

Yeah, and like I said, it's great to replace your DVD collection with. Sure you may not rip all the extra's and 2nd discs, but I really don't care about those most of the time anyways.

I am curious. I have not really looked at this that much, since I have so little time for that kind of thing in addition to Blu-ray.
When you rip a DVD, do you have your own software or does it have some of its own? What do you use to rip them and at what quality?

I know BD is better, but how many titles do they have and what is the cost?
I doubt I will get one, since my PS3 does so much, and i don't have any more HDMI inputs on my receiver (a switch is always an option for the future), but HOW DOES THE QUALITY COMPARE TO PSN MOVIES?

It doesn't come with its own software. The Apple TV, iPod's, iPhone, etc., all want you to just buy from iTunes. But you can manually manage your music, so you can rip your own CDs and add them. With the Apple TV, it's basically the same, except you're Syncing your content onto the Apple TV device, but it's still pretty easy to do. They don't give you software for it, but there are lots of options to choose from online. Some are free, some you have to buy. The movies come out in pretty good quality, some almost identical to their DVD disc version, and it will have audio up to 5.1 channel.

I have one too. I have only used it 2-3 times but the quality is in my opinion is very good. I am not sure why apple has not pushed it anymore than it has. It is kinda a product maybe a little before its time. There are alot more possibilities to do with it that could make it better.

The quality is as good as you want it to be. Remember that MPEG-4 is roughly twice as efficient as the MPEG-2 codec that DVD uses. If a DVD average 5Mbps, then 2.5Mbps will look identical. Some DVDs so use a higher bitrate, but 2.5Mbps is a good trade-off for quality vs. file size.

Definitely depends what you're using it for. If it's strictly for movies and you're a Bluray buff (which I'm betting you are) then you probably won't be impressed. But for me, I got it to replace my cable TV and I think it's great! Considering I don't watch a ton of TV, it comes out a lot cheaper, quality is just as good (if not better) than overly compressed cable signals and no commercials
