Default Is this a good deal?

JVC DLA-RS1 Full 1080P Cinema Projector - $2850

It's in my local Craigslist. I'm not really sure i'm in the market for a projector, but if really good ones can be had at this price i might be inclined to entertain the idea.
I've also never been able to demo a good projector with a blue ray player at a store. Does the quality of the picture compare to high end flat panels?

From what I gathered from my recent research is that the rs1 is still a very good projector. It still beats out the 08 models in the 3,000 price range. I think I seen some rs1 going as high as 4,000-$5000.00.

Oh and as far as PQ goes I've demoed the sony vs40 at my bestbuy with a dolby trueHD demo disc and the picture is amazing. I'm sure that the rs1 is even better since it's a better built projector.

If you don't have the funds but want a 1080p projector, sure. But if you have funds, I wouldn't suggest it. The PJ tech has changed since that one came out. Get one that is more current.

EDIT: Didn't realize that you're talking about a USED model as the MSRP on this is well above US$7000. If this is a USED model and since the RS2 is out for a year, I say no.

From Projector Central:
Quote:
Noteworthy Product Releases

The most intriguing product release of the show, in our view, was the Panasonic PT-AE3000. Why? It has several features which collectively make it a unique proposition for the mass consumer 1080p home theater marketplace. Not only does it have substantially improved black levels and apparent ANSI contrast compared to its predecessor, the AE2000, but it has two other new features that should earn it a great deal of consumer interest: (1) lens memory, and (2) frame interpolation.

The AE3000's lens memory enables the user to set the lens in a position for 2.35 widescreen Cinemascope viewing, and memorize that lens position. Then the lens can be zoomed to fit a 16:9 image into the height of a 2.35 screen, and that lens position is memorized as well. With these settings, the projector will automatically reconfigure itself at the press of a button for either 2.35 or 16:9 viewing. Essentially, what you get is the widescreen 2.35 and native 16:9 viewing experience without the cost or nuisance of an anamorphic lens. As far as we know, this is the only projector on the market that has this feature, and it should attract a great deal of consumer attention.

In addition, the AE3000 offers what Panasonic calls "Frame Creation" or frame interpolation. When displaying 1080p/60, it will generate half-step frame interpolations, and play them at 120 frames per second. The advantage is that it eliminates the motion blur that some users find objectionable on LCD projectors. Based on the demo we saw, the feature seems to work quite effectively. However, we are anxious to see it with our own sources and test clips before making any final assessment. Panasonic expects to be shipping the AE3000 by the end of October, and as of this writing, the price has not yet been established.
The MSRP for the AE2000 was about US$3500 and can be had now for US$2800. So when the AE3000 comes out next month, maybe you can try that model out.

Awesome. You've always been a big help with my questions, so here's one more. Is the noise from home projectors comparable to that generated by commercial theaters projectors? Is this something you have to worry about when picking one out for HT purposes?

A bit late to the party, but I don't think $2850 is a good deal for a used RS-1. For a NIB with full warranty, maybe. Given JVC's recent release of the RS20 and RS10, I would guess that you will soon see used RS-1's in the $1-2k range.

No, home theater projectors are nowhere near as noisy as commercial projectors. They vary in noise level, but most of the modern ones are fairly quiet. I believe the LCOS based units (Sony in particular, with JVC not far behind) are some of the quietest out there. The new JVC's are supposed to be dead quiet. DLP's tend to be a bit noisier. My single chip DLP is mounted about 3 feet above and behind me, and the noise it generates is generally unobtrusive. LCD's seem to be in the same class as DLP's as far as noise is concerned-- Not the quietest, but generally not bothersome.

It's good to see the JVC's are well regarded. I'm totally ignorant on the subject and like i said earlier, i'm not sure it's even feasible or necessary for me to go the projector route. I will read up on the subject and try my best to be frugal in the meantime. Looking at Brain Sturgeon's HT has me questioning my faith in mere tv monitors.
