Default Money to spend on BD's!

I've been putting aside some funds for future BD releases that I'd like to treat myself with over the coming holiday season.

I have a question for you all.

Being from Canada, we do not have a Black Friday sales extravaganza, so I'm wondering if it would be worth my while to take a drive across the border and find some deals that day. Are BD's usually heavily discounted then?

To MODS: if this needs to be moved, feel free. I didn't know where else to post.

Last year all the great deals where on the internet. Best Buy/Circuit City had one or two sales but hardly worth the driving for.

Let's hope that changes this year, now that BD is the lone format.

BTW, saginawjuggalo.....

How's that Sanyo 1080 projector treating you? I currently have a Sanyo 720p projector and am going to be upgrading to a 1080p pro soon. Should I stay with Sanyo?

Hi,

I do Black Friday every year. My wife puts aside $100 for my little celebration. Anyway.... where I live it's gotten more and more insane in terms of people being at the store at 2AM (like 200 people at 2AM).

Like someone said... lots of the deals can be had online which is also a factor. Last year I went out at 2 looked at the people and came home and went back to bed. At 9:30 I was able to get many of the items I was looking for without lines however the line at Best Buy was still not negotiable. The Best Buy sales went for the whole day though and stuff like some of the sale DVDs was still available after noon so I just went back later.

If you want a $400 laptop...I wouldn't even know how early you would have to go but I'm sure it wouldn't be "worth it."

Anyway,... I love Black Friday but don't really know what to tell ya. I think I would follow along the BF threads and shop online. (I may even do that myself this year.)

Thx for your comments! I think I'll check out the deals online then. Besides, on the money I will have saved on gas I'd probably pick up 2 or 3 more BD's. Now, there is a real incentive!

I'm hoping to find some deals on the OPUS ARTE classical releases. Right now they are still super expensive. I also want to get several SACD titles and/or DVD-A (depending what's available on either format).

Here's some other titles I'm looking to pick up:

1. All of the Harry Potter titles.
2. All of the Batman titles.
3. Whatever I can find by David Lean.
4. Planet Earth (David Attenborough narration)
I have the DVD version which I'll sell or trade
5. All of the POTC titles
6. A few Kung Fu type movies. Suggestions anyone?

So Im probably looking at about 15 or so titles.

Gonna be major fun!

I have indeed! Other than Pulp Fiction, I've never been a big Quentin Tarantino fan....But maybe I should check it out.

OMG...if you like kung fu movies, especially 70s kung fu like Sonny Chiba, definitely check out Kill Bill. You will love it.

What about movies like HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS (?) and the like. I'm a sucker for those grandiose outdoor sets. Which is why I love just about everything David Lean ever directed.

House of Flying Daggers is famous for it's poor picture quality on Blu Ray but... I thought the DVD version looked great and the Blu Ray looks even better.

Surely not the PQ of Casino Royale or Cars or No Country but... the flip side is if you can find HoFD it's usually cheap.

I own it. I enjoy it.

But,... you need to check out Kill Bill, I think it's the most compelling Blu Ray release so far.

I'll definately check out KILL BILL.....will more than likely rent it from the Blockbuster across the road. I read the reviews and both PQ/AQ are 5/5, so that certainly bodes well for a future purchase.

Kung Fu Hustle (classic)
Dragon Tiger Gate (okay)

Flash Point (very nice)
SPL (very nice)

Flash Point,SPL are foreign blu-rays im not sure you'll find them on sale during Black Friday, but they're great newer martial arts movies and if you can find them get them!

I don't think any of Lean's movies have made it to blu yet. LoA will be the first, but i think it keeps getting pushed back. I'm sure it will be breathtaking.

Only Passage To India for now, but I'm hopeful. I's love to see Lawrence of Arabia and Bridge On The River Kwai in Blu.....that would be spectacular. I can't seem to find any release dates on them however, but I sure do hope the studios don't let them sit in the archives without a full Blu treatment.

Love my copy of A PASSAGE TO INDIA. It's one Lean film I'd always passed over, but I was pleasantly surprised. Not sure if Alec Guinness is at his best, but the film is gorgeous on BD.

I'm going to Circuit City on the day after Thanksgiving and I'm getting a 1080P 40 inch for $200.

Black Friday is really only worth it now if making a mega-purchase like a tv or computer. The Internet over the past ten years has drawn too much attention to the various deals found on Black Friday and it has become significantly harder to wade through the increased crowds.
