Default Samsung BD-P1400 & 7.1 Sound

This has probably been asked and answered before but I did a search and couldn't find anything.

I thought the 1400 supported the 7.1 sound format but my buddy is getting no sound from his back speakers.

Any info or suggestions? Thanks guys.

What connections method is he using for audio to the receiver?
HDMI?
Optical?

What transport medium is he using?
bitstream?
PCM?

What kind of receiver does he have ?

Does the blu-ray disc you are watching have 7.1 audio?

DTS-MA doesn't automatically mean its a 7.1 soundtrack.
