Trophies mandatory 'soon', hints Capcom's John Diamonon

In the comments for a post on PlayStation.Blog, a reader complains about other commenters complaining about the lack of trophy support for games like Mega Man 9. "The day will come when you get trophies in almost every game then you will complain about something else ignorant."

John Diamonon of Capcom posts a follow-up comment to the statement, hinting "that day is coming soon." We already know Capcom's contract with Sony stipulate Trophy support for all future titles, but is Diamonon hinting at something more widespread? Considering how obsessed we can be about Trophies, we hope to hear something more official soon. Do you guys think Sony should require all games to have Trophy support in the near future, similar to the Microsoft requirement that all their titles contain Achievements?

I think that all titles should have trophy support even if they are lame trophies.

Well I wouldn't go that far but every game should at least have the very basic "game completion" trophies. For games with a SP campaign anyway.

It also boggles my mind that MGS4 doesn't have official PS3 trophies especially considering that "trophies" are already built into the scoring system of the game internally...

I would say that Sony should contract in that any 360 game with "achievements" that has a PS3 counterpart should have an equal or greater number of trophies.

The idea that games on 360 have achievements while on the PS3 have NOTHING pisses me off.

We should be paying less, or Sony should charge the Dev a no-trophie-support "tax". Right now we are getting less for the money (when games look the same, and the other guy gets more little things).

I think every game released in 2009 and onward will have trophy support. Its not mandatory now bc some games are too far in the development cycle to implement them, but that shouldnt be an excuse by next year

I really could careless about trophies.

I mean sure, it does give it a little extra PUSH for me to buy the game, but not enough.

I want replay value, and great gameplay, I don't care about trophies.

Trophies are 100% mandatory for me.

Long ago I didn't care about such things, but I've been converted. It adds a little something to games.

Perhaps if Assassin's Creed had trophies, I'd see a point to killing Templars and collecting flags.

Some people don't care and that's nice, but what matters are the people that do, because we're the ones who might be on the fence about purchasing.

I won't buy any PS3 game AFTER 2008 unless it has trophies (unless it's some kick butt exclusive). And I'm sure most games will. Got to give trophies time to take hold.

Next year conversations about new games not having trophies should be pretty much gone.

Trophies do add replay value. Look at how many people have been replaying Uncharted and those who have gotten back into Warhawk bc of them

thats how i feel and i hope this means trophy support from their previous titles and newer titles like Street Fighter 4

any way yeah i hope they do make it mandatory. it makes the game interesting. i know i've started playing pain a lot more lately because of them.

I don't think it will be every game in 2009, but by mid 2009 probably. Sony has said trophies will become mandatory at some point and the reason they aren't currently is exactly what you stated - some games were just too far into development already.

Ahh thats actually true.

Well, I still don't need trophies, if I like the game enough, I'll go back and play it through, such as MGS4, or even Uncharted (if it didn't have trophies.)
