Default HTPC- HD audio

So does onboard sound decode HD audio for HTPCs? So do we still hear the difference like everyone else?

onboard HD audio is a joke. Most motherboard manufacturers advertise HD audio but it's really not good sound quality. It's all software decoding and there's no volume being pushed through even if it's via S/P-DIF out or optical TOS link connection. Unless you just want to save some money, you can use onboard audio but please get an S/P-DIF connection. You're probably better off buying a dedicated sound card. Something like the creative sound blaster Xi-Fi PCi-e is affordable and supports 7.1 sound with an optical out connection. Auzentech is suppose to be coming out with a snd card any day that's suppose to be the first pc snd card to have onboard Dolby DTS-HD audio & True-HD audio with no downsampling. It has HDMI out that integrates your video with the snd cards snd stream and sends out via one HDMI cable. see auzentech.com. It's probably going to be expensive, at least $199 if not more like $250.

So currently no oboard sound offers true Hidh-Definition audio? Just downsampled audio? Will it still sound better then DVD? My mobo is a 750i
