Default DTS Defacto standard

Why can't we have DTS as the standard for 5:1 sound. ?

That's what Dolby Digital is for.

Back in the days of DVD, DTS and DD has a format war of their own. For a time you had to look at the disc you were buying and make sure you didn't buy the one that wouldn't play on your gear.

One bad thing about DTS is DD was always more popular and if gear only supported one format is was always DD. Another problem was if you put a DTS DVD into certain gear that didn't support DTS you would get loud digital noise that damaged equipment and that angered anyone who experienced it.

More recently,... DTS bombs is a similar type of thing that showed up when bitstreaming DTS from Blu Rays (and possibly HD DUDs but I don't know much about those.) The DTS bomb was also a speaker damaging noise but I didn't read much about them.... my PS3 is always set to PCM so I never was in danger of those. Edit- I'm not doing well explaining the DTS Bomb thingie but here's a link about it from this forum....

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?p=863735

So,... I enjoy some DTS these days esp DTS-MA,... but I think it doesn't compete (for popularity) with DD all that well anymore.

-Brian

I'm behind ya, baby! 110%!
Lots of people I know, including everyone at my favorite a/v salon as well as my personal salesperson, speak volumes about the superiority of DTS.
Some studios out there (Warner, Di$ney, Paramount/DreamWorks) have dropped the ball by going Dolby and sticking to it with such stubbornness for so many years. New Line Cinema is starting to concern me -- it started out with fine releases in DTS HD-MA, but now (all of a sudden), they have switched over to Dolby. I mean, "Journey to the Center of the Earth" in Dolby?!? I don't think so!! No sale for me!!
Like I said, Behind ya baby!!

Why would you want to have a lossy codec as the standard for 5.1 sound???

This entire thread is moot on this board. As the previous poster mentioned, you're all talking about lossy codecs on a blu-ray forum, where we should be discussing lossless.

In addition, the rules that applied to DTS and DD (in that DTS had a higher bitrate) don't really apply to lossless audio and DTS-HD MA and TRUEHD.

Since I have just bought myself a Sony STR DA3400ES and have been running most of my bd discs and I hear that DTS is just so much better then any other audio system. Dolby True is ok but nothing like DTS.

Thank god that the james bond BD series is using DTS.

When comes to DD (dolby Digital) I prefer to say the least about this...

So must say I love the discs that say this "THIS THEATER SUPPORTS DTS"

Actually, it was your demeanor I'm sure.

And... that conversation was about lossless, not lossy.

In DVDs, DTS > DD because of the way they were mixed, not because of the compression technology, hence it sounds better - i.e., LOTR, Jurassic Parks, War of the Worlds, Gladiator.

In Blu-rays, DTS = TrueHD = PCM. Honestly. Although this is a long-standing debate. It's all in the mix. In Top Gun, where the DTS-HD MA track sounds "better" than the TrueHD - it is due to the mixing...the TrueHD track is the original track from the movie, the DTS-HD track was re-mixed and re-done with more "oomph."

I would like DTS HD/MA 7.1 to be the defacto standard for all Blu-rays.

For all of us who have yet to upgrade to a lossless receiver - it is just great to get that DTS Core until I upgrade. Wish all studios had this.
