I know many BR.com member have served in the US military, but this is a problem that encompasses all Americans.
United States Marine Rafael Peralta was killed in action November 15th, 2004. He was killed in house to house fighting in Iraq when his team entered a house. He was not ordered to enter the house, but he did anyway. He was shot several times and before he died, by all eye witness accounts, he was able to actively (he intended too) cover an enemy grenade with his body, killing him, but saving his team. On Jan 22nd, 2008 The United States Marine Corps and the United States Congress approved Sgt Peralta for the Congressional Medal of Honor. This approval sat on the POTUS's desk for 8 months before some desk jockey at the Pentagon decided Peralta did not rate a CMOH. Many people do not understand what the differences between a Silver Star and a Medal of Honor are, but I assure you, this is a slap in the face of Peralta, the Marines he served with, the Marines I served with, the Marine Corps, the Military as a whole, and the people of the United States, Citizens or not. When these warriors are killed in action, and their actions are recognized by their branch of the military, and our house of representatives, and then dismissed by some guy sitting at a desk in the Pentagon, they are disrespecting ALL OF US. The argument the Pentagon made was that Peralta was too gravely wounded to knowingly cover the grenade, yet his entire team has said otherwise. Who claims it? Some doctor looking at autopsy records... PLEASE write to your congressmen and senators. This kind of disrespect should not be tolerated in a free society. If you are not an American, but you care, please write to the State Department of the United States, or pick a US senator. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rafael_Peralta |
