Default Valkyrie moved back into 'Oscar season'

Valkyrie is getting moved back to December 26th due to really good buzz from screenings. Maybe it could have something to do with his great turn in Tropic Thunder (Which he WAS great in)?

Valkyrie is based on the true story of Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, who plotted and failed to assassinate Hitler during World War II.

What?!? How about a spoiler alert! lol I wrote a paper in college about the many assasination attempts on Hitler. Its amazing how lucky Hitler was in surviving them all. Should be a fascinating movie.

I always thought the rule was that a movie had to have been showing for 7 days (in Los Angeles & New York, or something like that) to be eligible for Academy Award consideration.
That would require a release on December 25th

Yeah, Dec 26th wouldn't make a whole lot of sense. But what kind of Oscar buzz is it getting? I would love to see Tom Cruise win an Oscar finally. He really is a great actor.

Actually its being pushed UP. It was scheduled for an October release, then pushed back to February 2009, now back up to Christmas 08

That is exactly right, well except that it doesn't have to be in New York, just Los Angeles County for 7 consecutive days. So releasing it one day past suggests zero confidence in Oscar worthy material or purposeful sabotage by some execs.

I rewatched the trailer with a couple coworkers today and we all had the same reaction, 'eh'. Maybe a new retooled trailer will help but right now it looks like this film is getting dumped by the Studio. At least now it isn't being released on Valentines Day anymore.

Yes, I knew this. I meant back to this year or back to Oscar season.

Maybe they'll open it one day early in LA?

That would be the logical thing to do. I mean it is just one day.

just cause he's a nut doesn't mean it ruined his career! Did he all the sudden stop acting good?

First sentence is right... second sentence is not.

The eligibility year rule (for 2008) is:

Quote:
The required Los Angeles County qualifying run (described in Rule Two Paragraph 2) must open between January 1, 2008 and midnight of December 31, 2008."
A movie this year qualifies if it opens at 11:59pm on December 31, 2008, so long as it continues running at least through Jan. 6, 2009. December 26 is not past any deadline. Not sure why, but that's always a common misperception.

Good call, it still has to run for 7 consecutive days, but what was always confusing is that apparently those 7 days don't all have to reside in the same year as you pointed out. I could have sworn that it wasn't always like that and that the 25th was a deadline.

It's been like that at LEAST since 2000 (I just double checked the old rules)... not sure about prior to then. I think people get confused since studios usually at least do an LA/NY release starting on Dec. 25 for any possible Oscar-worthy films as everyone's off work and a pretty good number of people hit the theatres that day. People assume its due to Academy rules, when really its just marketing -- like everything else in Hollywood.

Releasing by the 25th does serve a minor secondary purpose, though. If you're just releasing in a single LA-area theatre for Academy purposes, and something goes wrong (theatre burns down or film print gets stolen or destroyed) and they aren't able to exhibit the film one day, you have until the 31st to get a new print to the same or a new theatre to start your eligibility run over. If you release on the 31st and something goes wrong in your only theatre on Jan. 4, you can end up ineligible.
