Today I went out and bought the Pioneer VSX1018 receiver. I just had a couple noob questions before using it:
1) Do receivers in any way affect the video on your TV? (This is my first receiver so I'm a little unclear on this, dont all inputs have to go to the receiver and then 1 out to your TV, so wouldn't this mean the TV is in a sense "controlled" by the receiver?) 2) I hear about "1080p upscaling" ...what is it? Does it matter that I only have a 720p set and will this affect anything in any way? 3) Will lip sync be an issue? I know for those who have the knowledge, these questions may seem a little "dumb" but I am new to this and would like to learn. Thanks. |

1. They shouldn't. It should be a direct output of the video without processing. Some have some modes to change settings but at their base it shouldn't be touching it.
2. Sounds like that receiver will upscale component/composite/s-video inputs and output them via HDMI at 1080p. There's probably a setting for this to change it to 720p, but honestly your set probably just downconverts it again. That's a lot of steps though so try a few different settings to see how it looks for you. 3. Shouldn't be, but if it is there's a setting to time the audio for any lip sync issues. |

Upconversion is the exact same as an upconverting player. That receiver has a Faroudja chip so it should be pretty damn good at it, as far as upscaling goes. |

It really shouldn't affect the video. Most receivers just pass it along without messing with it, outside of upscaling.
While I understand your concerns in trying to get the "purest" video and audio, you really don't need to worry about that pio messing with stuff. |

so its safe to say that although receivers play a slight role in passing along video to your TV they tend not to alter them in any way (unless upscaling like you mentioned?)
would it try to upscale BD though? because my tv is 720p, would it upscale it to 1080i? I prefer to watch in 720p...would there be an option for this? all in all i just want to be reassured that the receiver i purchased is good quality and will only help my home theatre... i am very excited about finally hearing hd audio and hope i dont run into those little problems (ex. lip sync) that people have. thanks for all the help btw aramis |
