WTF: Russell Crowe Cast as Both Robin Hood and The Sheriff in Nottingham?!

Director Ridley Scott tells MTV that not only will Russell Crowe play The Sheriff in his upcoming revisionist take on the Robin Hood story, but the actor will be doing double duty as Robin Hood.

Nottingham is a 180 degree spin of the Robin Hood story-line where the Sheriff is the protagonist and Robin Hood is the bad guy. The Sheriff finds himself caught in the middle of a situation which pits an outlaw named Robin Hood who “who threatens to rouse the public in popular anarchy” and a corrupt and unpopular king who demands the arrest of the outlaw.

The script was subject to a 2007 bidding war between most of the major studios. Crowe has been attached to the project since it was announced, even before Scott was brought on board. Christian Bale was once incorrectly rumored to play the famous outlaw. The project was put on hold in July due to “labor trouble”. Crowe is certainly capible to play both roles, but it still seems like an odd or unnecessary decision.

I wasn't interested when I first heard of this, based on the people in it, but this development makes it a little different, and at least somewhat interesting to me.

If true, I think Scott and Crowe can pull this off. Makes the fighting scenes more interesting, I think.

This was one of my favorite Disney cartoons as a kid and I still enjoy it. I am not sure I would like a live action adaptation of this film We get the Master and Commander and the thief of Sherwood Forest...........oooodahlaleh

Uhh....there have been countless live action "adaptations". Disney wasn't even the first to put the story of Robin Hood on the silver screen.

Hmmm very interesting. Robin Hood as the bad guy??? With Crowe playing as two different characters, it better be a comedy or it'll be a disaster if it were a serious movie.

So, you're saying that in this take, the Sheriff is really Robin Hood? That would be interesting, but WHY? The Sheriff has always been the "law abiding citizen" in any adaptation. I guess that's the key word, though--adaptation.

Actually I think the key word(s) is "always been" which is what makes this take an interesting way to go. If you are going to do an adaptation of something that has been done dozen's of times before, might as well try to go at it from a different angle.
