Exclamation Guillermo del Toro booked thru 2017

Variety

Quote:
Many top film directors have no idea what their next movie is. But Guillermo del Toro is now booked through 2017. And maybe beyond.

Universal — which has a three-year first-look deal with the helmer inked in June ’07 — and del Toro are making a long-term commitment by setting up four directing projects, including remakes of "Frankenstein," "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" and "Slaughterhouse-Five."

The fourth project is an adaptation of "Drood," a Dan Simmons novel acquired by U that will be published in February by Little, Brown.

Of course, del Toro’s first priority is New Line and MGM’s "The Hobbit," to which he has committed the next five years. He has begun writing "Hobbit" with Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, collaborating via video conferencing and trips to New Zealand every three weeks.

While it’s difficult, if not impossible, to plan projects five years into the future, at this point U execs think "Drood" is the most likely to be del Toro’s first post-"Hobbit" directing vehicle.

If both sides have their way, the helmer will belong to Universal after "The Hobbit" wraps.

In addition to the four pics, the studio still has its sights set on del Toro’s pet project, an adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s "At the Mountains of Madness."

As if that is not enough to keep him busy, U also has on the horizon an adaptation of David Moody’s apocalyptic novel "Hater" that del Toro will produce with Mark Johnson but not direct, and "Crimson Peak," a gothic romance spec script by del Toro and his "Mimic" collaborator Matthew Robbins, which del Toro will produce but not direct.

I really like his aesthetic direction... he's gonna be a huge asset to Universal. If you think he gets his pick of prime projects now, just imagine how in-demand he's going to be after they see 'The Hobbit'. He's well on his way to becoming his own industry.

easily one of my favorite directors especially in a day where Hollywood continues to deliver crap to the mindless masses.

1) I wish I were that lucky. I need to direct something.
2) Could he be taking over as my favorite director? He's certainly overshadowing Peter Jackson.
3) I can't wait to see his films.

He's on the same trajectory as Peter Jackson: struggling from the start to get appreciation for some very oddball, low-budget movies, to being regarded as artistically brilliant... in a few years, he'll be sitting back as a producer and calling all the shots, just like Jackson and Lucas.

I've always been amused at how Jackson went from making what are perhaps some of the worst movies ever, to doing gigantic masterpieces like LotR and 'King Kong'.

As far as I'm concerned this is my most anticipated film from him. If anybody can do Lovecraft justice, it will be him.

Especially considering that by the time he gets to it, he'll have the industry clout to make it a totally unrestrained personal vanity project with a virtually unlimited budget.

Surely there has to be a Hellboy III in the future too. And before Ron Pearlman gets too old for it

H.P. Lovecraft?!?! AWESOME! He would do great with an official HPL story. I can't wait to see that.
The Hobbit will be awesome. He has got to be one of the busiest guys in Hollywood.

Good director though, so definitely looking forward to all his work.

I hope so, as I am a fan of Lovecraft's writing style. Every other book into film adaptation I have seen others do of his work were pretty much crap.

I call BS on that list, Del Toro said he wants to do Hellboy III after hobbit or some other movie after hobbit and than HB in not so distant future.

The only movie Jackson made that is questionable is his involvement in The Frightners. His older b horror movies are all really well made. In fact they were really popular (for b horror) before he was ever involved with Lord of the Rings. Making a b horror movie that is not utter crap is actually really hard to do and honestly requires good taste.
