Default Need Advice

I am looking for a stand alone Blu-Ray Player. I already own a PS3 but I cannot stand the fan noise when watching movies .... so a stand alone player is required. I am about to buy a relatively hi end HDMI switching amp/receiver (Yamaha 6290) so I would prefer to ONLY use HDMI Cables from my components (PS3, Bell ExpressVu Satellite/Blu-Ray Player) to the amp instead of video (HDMI) plus digital cables (Coax/Optical) (which I have to do now since my current amp does not have HDMI inputs).

I also NEED to be able to play DVD Movies, DVD-A, and SACD discs and I need to have them (audio) uncompressed through the HDMI output to the amp.

So ..... suggestions?

Good luck! Let me know when you see this. Sorry, seems it would be impossible to see all these in one package.

Rather than look at the Yamaha YHT series with the 6290 (though I couldnt find any info on it so I went off of the 6180) which for the same price you could get the RXV1800 on clearance with the Hi Res audio decoding and then go with their new bluray player...its fast and it sounds great! Although it wont play SACD or the DVD-A hi res format...so far the only thing I've seen mentioned to do those are the upcoming Oppo BD Player.

I'm not aware of any current standalone player that plays SACDs also.

Sorry mate - I applaud you for seeing the beauty in a stand-alone player. Keep in mind though that you might not want your Blu-ray player to the 'the jack of all trades.'

So far, no BD player is a true Universal player. The discontinued Panasonic BD10 could play DVD-A but not SACD.

If you're getting the receiver, as an interim solution, you can choose to get one of those Universal DVD player from Oppo. Combined with the PS3, you get all of your media's covered. Just keep the PS3 cool by ventilating it well in a cool place.

It is rumored that Oppo will come up with a Universal BD player. That would be a great solution.

Thanks Gents ... I guess I have my answer. I thought there was a Universal Blu-Ray Player out there but I guess not (yet)? Maybe a better solution for now is to find a way to isolate the PS3 better to reduce the fan noise?

I am assuming for everything BUT Blu-Ray, the Oppo is hard to beat for the price? Would you concur?

Wait for the Oppo I'm sure it will have everything you need.
I am in the same situation as you are, I have a PS3 and want a true
universal standalone. So waiting for the Oppo it is!

as mentioned, your best bet would be the Oppo. they apparently will be releasing their player by the end of the year (read: spring 2009), and have all the features you are salivating for. unfortunately, im not aware of a blu-ray player that does dvd-audio, since blu ray is associated with sony, and sacd is their proprietary choice in regards to the multichannel format.

I checked out the OPPO DV-983H but as some of you have suggested I may be better to wait for the Oppo Blu-Ray model to come out? I think I may go ahead with the HDMI Switching Amp in the meantime, live with my current peripherals and wait for the next Oppo. Sooner or later there will be a "do it all" player on the market no doubt. Maybe a small cabinet with doors on the front, air vent on the back and possibly a whisper fan on the side to aid air extraction might do the trick for the PS3? The fan noise doesn't bother me when playing games but when watching movies it sucks (technical term).

Thanks for all the information and confirmation. Good forum.
