Default bad exp. with Blu Ray :( ...please help. Very confused.

Hello, Members!
I come to you in desperate help! Here's my story:

About a year ago I bought the Sony BDP-s301 and besides being huge and having super slow loading times and not playing all of the bluray discs, when it did play one, it looked superb, the image, the quality. . .you know as a 1080p movie usually looks. Ok, so here's the deal. . . I sold the s301 to a friend of mine and decided to buy the Samsung BD-P4600 because of the loading times and the awesome desing. When I plugged it to my Sony 42" bravia using the "Monster cable 60/120 Hz 8bit color 10.2Gbps HDMI" the image is really really not "bLU RAY like". Movies don't play in full screen, the TV and the device are both on 1080p settings and I always get a letter box when the movie plays. . . It looks like a normal DVD movie, NOT Blu Ray.

I don't know what to do. The sony one is supposed to be and older model and the image was great on the same bravia and the samsung is not giving me Bluray image!

ANy idea on how to fix this problem? is it fixable? what im I doing wrong. . .

Please help, I'm looking forward to seeing bluray movies!!!!

Thanks in advance!

which movies are you trying??? Alot of Blu-ray Movies are widescreen so most of the time there is Black bars on the top and bottom of the screen. Make sure your blu ray player is set to 1080p output in the blu ray players settings.

Well when I got a TV for the room my BD player is in and I hooked up with HDMI and selected 1080p as the resolution it said incompatible or something, but I set the BD player (Sony 560) to auto resolution and it came up as 1080p and worked. Try auto on your BD player if it has that setting, thats my advice.

EDIT Remember all movies don't have the same aspect ratio!!!!!

If a movie was shot in a 2:35 aspect ratio (wider than a widescreen tv) than it's not going to play fullscreen and it will have the black bars at the top and bottom. So that is not a "problem" with your player.

Check out this thread for an in-depth explanation

As for the quality of the image being displayed, I don't know why it would look like DVD quality...unless your only reason for thinking that is because of the letterboxing.

Most Bluray will still play in a letterbox with black bars. Some films, mostly animation or Imax scenes, play without the bars. So if the issue is the black bars i'd say it sounds like the settings were out on the sony not the samsung.

Other than mentioning the bars you dont really give to much detail on the problem.

Thanks for the advice.

Here are a few things.

The movie being with the letterbox does not bother me to much. Its the image. Its very noticable. THe BLU RAY is set up to be in 1080p and the TV, too.

and the difference form the s301 to the p4600 is very noticeable. For example (heres mi pov ) when I see a bluray movie its like it has no screen and Im inside the movie. Like Im filming the movie myself. Like Im seeing the images in real life. . . . . however, with the samsung its not like that?

any other help is greatly appreciated

well if your watching a different movie, Not all Blu-ray Movies are made equal. In Fact Theres more mediocre Picture Quality movies than there is Great ones. Are you playing the same movie in the samsung, that you were watching in the Sony. . . . THE movie that you thought you were in the movie

THats a good point. The two movies i've watched are Inglorious Basterds and Wolverine (xmen). . . the one that looked really good on the sony was "fighting"

I though at least Basterds was going to be mind blowing. . .

\So basically if the samsung's on 1080p and the TV s on 1080p and the movie comes out with the letter box its normal and maybe the movie's just made that way. . . correct???

Like above, make sure you check the aspect ratio of the movies you're trying out. Terminator 2 (the original release) for example uses letterbox. It's still 1080p quality, just not "fullscreen".

Basterds has very good PQ. You have to have a setup issue.

That is correct.

Out of curiosity, what is the sharpness on your tv set to? It should be set to zero, max. You should also look into calibrating your tv.

I have a similar problem with my new Panasonic BMP BD65 blu-ray player and new Sony 46EX500 LCD TV. The picture is sharp and defined awesomely but the image is quite dark and 'bland' even on a Pixar movie. Something isn't right as I thought the image would really 'pop', but at the moment I'm pretty disappointed..

(Hope I didn't hi-jack your thread, sorry, I'm just brand new here).
