Is your device oem or retail? you can always send back your device when it breaks while updating if it's retail (retail usually comes with limited time warranty)

Upgrading firmware will not damage your system unless it is interrupted while updating, if it does, it's fixable.
make sure nothing is running on background, and don't install it using battery power if it's a laptop.

I haven't had any trouble updating firmware(iphone, my blu-ray drive, flashing bios, etc..)
just follow the instruction. you'll be fine.

I have a Sony Vaio VGN AR730E laptop with a Matshita BD-CMB UJ-120 blu-ray player. Can it play the new BDLive or do I need a firmware update ?

Typing this on an AR730E/B, same drive - BDLive works fine.
It's the playback software.
Currently, there is no drive update...

ArcSoft TotalMedia Theatre or PowerDVD Ultra... WinDVD won't do it.
