Need new receiver!

Okay, so I'm ready to pull the trigger on a receiver and some speakers now. It should be noted that I don't mind waiting for prices to come down, and I do not mind starting off with a 2.0/3.0/2.1/ setup.

Quality of the speakers / receiver is important, but I want to keep the entire purchase under $1000. Although I could go a little over that if need be.

I notice that Amazon as the Onkyo 606, 705 and 805 for $347, $479 and $599, respectively. I'm open to Denon and Pioneer also.

I live in an apartment so I don't need anything insane - but I do want a receiver that will last for many years.

Okay - so what receiver should I get?? I'd like the receiver to say under $600 - but can go a little over for a great deal.

Also, any speaker suggestions to pair with the receiver??
