Being kind of sick of poorly mixed cds and lowbitrate mp3s, I decided to look for a better way to enjoy music. When my mom told me that she had an old turntable and lots of old records in the storeroom in was intrigued.
So after taking it out, hooking it up to the reciever and plugging her in... I can't figure out how to make it play. ![]() The poor thing's in storage a long time, it's probably broken (though Mom says it was working fine before it was packed up). There seem to be a lot of audiophiles on these boards, so I figured I'd ask here first. Does anyone have an idea of what may be wrong, and is it something I could fix myself or would I have to take it in to someone? Which brings up another good question. Does anyone even work on these things anymore....? |

First thing is to plug in the L and R cables from the tonearm into the phono input or possibly an auxiliary input on the back of your pre amp or Pre/Pro. If the stylus is still good (not damaged or gone from the cantilever) and the cartridge is a Moving Magnet rather than a Moving Coil cartridge it should play. However, you will probably need to increase the volume more for the turntable than for a CD or DVD player. If however, the cartridge is a Moving Coil Cartridge you will also need a step up transformer or a Moving Coil Phono Preamp to boost the output for your pre amp or Pre/Pro. It is also possible that leads from the cartridge or some of the wiring from the cartridge and through the tonearm, or the cables coming from the tonearm are bad.

I do not know your turntable. However, I found the Youtube video. In the video as you mentioned, it shows the platter starting when the tonearm is lifted and brought toward the platter. This is a belt drive turntable. So if the belt is absent, torn, etc, this could prevent the platter from turning. However, there may be a problem with the motor, bearing, or the switch that turns the platter when you raise the tonearm as examples. If you can, my first suggestion would be to try to lift the platter off of the turntable to check the belt. No on off switch on the turntable?
I am sorry that I may not be of any more help. But, the turntable may have to be brought in if we can not get the platter to turn on its own. Rich |

If the records are in pretty good shape, buy a new turntable. You don't need to spend too much money.
