Default Current PS3's backwards compatibility Q

I heard that the current batch of 80GB PS3's being sold are not able to play any PS2 games unless you purchase a patch online and download it through the PS store. Then once purchased and downloaded, ALL PS2/PS1 game will work.

Is this true?

Short answer, no it is not true.

The 80GB has software backwards compatibility, and they are plenty of post talking about specefic games ect..

The download is to enable the hard drive to be accessible to hard drive games on the PS2 (I can only think of 2.. Socom).. and you do not have to pay for it..the download that is.

I do know the current 80 GB models do not have PS2 playback but it does support PS1 (All PS3s support PS1). However, the previous model (Metal Gear Solid Bundle-80 GB) does have playback capabilities for PS2 but since it has a limited supply, it's harder to find and may cost more. On the patches and downloads, I'm not too sure if its true or just a rumor. Many of these forum members may assist you with further questions.

You're thinking of the old 80gig (motorstorm/MGS4 bundles)
The new 80gig is basically a 40gig with a bigger hard drive.
So no PS2 BC for now.

That's not true, but... there's a rumor that might be how it'll work for select PS2 games in the future. Where did you hear that?

Btw, PS1 games work on all systems. PS2 games won't work on an 80 GB system unless it's a bundle (Motorstorm, MGS4).
