If these are tall enough (and you can get over the fact that they are MONSTER branded) they look like a good match

That's a complete ripoff. You can get a very similiar looking pair of off brand ones at Best Buy for under 100.00

This site is pretty cool. Big selection in a wide range of prices; or you could get some ideas for things to build yourself if you are handy.

Does anyone else realize just how expensive speaker stands are for what they actually are?

For example, I bought Atlantic stands...for two hollow black pipes and two metal bases, they are pretty expensive.

With the additional price of good speaker stands to a bookshelf, I just went ahead and bought myself towers.

My friend, trust me, unless you are as finicky an audiophile as they come, they will, for all practical purposes, be the same.

Thats what i did too. I couldn't find the Mirage 150s anywhere below the $300msrp. So i bought a pair of Omni 350 towers for $200pr. I didn't have to buy stand, plus they have an extra driver in each tower. Save money and get better speakers!
