HDTV price drops? sign of the times?

i've "been away" from things for a while. (hence the signature). i recently walked into a Circuit City, and was shocked to find HDTVs at an all time low, despite the 16% hike we all suffered last spring. i saw a 58" 1080p plasma, for $3000. i can't remember which brand, (maybe Sammy). i also saw a 42" 1080p plasmas for under a $1000. (not off brand). what explains this. the economic crisis?
