Those go here right?
Anyway. I don't think this has been discussed, and if it has it wasn't in a forum that I found. BUT... I was wondering if you guys thought the Xbox 3 would use Blu-rays... They CAN'T make Xbox 3 and still use DVDs. I wonder what their plan will be. Any thoughts? |

lol.
well to go on a bit more here..they would love to ignore blu-ray and be all digital, but its clearly way too early for that, so they'll be forced to have a disc drive again. and unless some huge breakthrough shows up soon (very unlikely), they'll have to stick a blu-ray drive in there. |

I read somewhere the development cycle of a game console is about five years. I can't imagine when Xbox 3 comes out, it being DVD based and pushing that format for another 5 years. Suppose it's released in 2010, then it's DVD gaming through 2015. Can't see it happening.

I suspect a BD drive in a next gen Xbox is a done deal, or at the very least a reasonable expectationo. The only way I can see them going DVD, is if it's for backwards compatibility to the 360 and the games are loaded onto some sort of flash ROM or something like that (think USB drive, memory cards, etc) for distribution. With the new Oct/Nov update for the 360 allowing for HDD installs, the new XBox may utilize that functionality quite a bit.
The positives for flash ROM distribution is that it's virtually noiseless, doesn't have the space limitations of optical media (50gigs on a BD aside) less system heat/powerconsumption, and one less part to break (DVD/BD player). Primary downside is cost of course, BDs are cheaper to make. Though in 5 years, who knows? I look forward to the next Xbox, and the next PS3. I think BOTH still have a lot of life left in them, but I'm still anxious to see what's next. camper |

thats not that far out there of an idea.
in fact, it would make quite a bit of sense. - No R&D or Royalty Fees - 30GB worth of space - No commercial use outside of Xbox 3 - Production costs are low - Xbox Add on Owners will be pleased That said, I think they will not put blu-ray in the new xbox, what they will do is offer an add on much like the HD DVD one. That way, they are not having to pay royalty costs on every single Xbox sold, just the add-ons. Use HD DVD for games, blu-ray add on for movies. or use a Xbox specific format for games, blu-ray add on for movies. They do not want a little bit of money from every game and console sold going directly to Sony. |
